Breaking Developments in Elizabeth Olten case

Posted: 05:43 PM ET

New stunning reports have emerged in the Elizabeth Olten case today. On Friday we first learned about the body of the 9 year old being found in a heavily wooded area behind her home. Police had been searching that area for days, but for some reason did not find Elizabeth until Friday afternoon…now we know why.

Elizabeth Olten.
Elizabeth Olten.

Police reveal they were led to the location of the body by a teen that they now have in custody and plan to charge in connection with Elizabeth’s murder. Cops say that physical and written evidence led them to the identification of the suspect, including a letter from an unidentified person. After interviewing the teen, cops were led to the body, which they say was very well concealed in the wooded area, which would explain why authorities were not able to find it before.

Now we are learning, through multiple media reports and neighbors, that the teen suspect, who will be charged in the murder, is a 15 year old girl! Cops won’t reveal much about the suspect, besides their age, but have asked the district attorney’s office to charge the teen with first degree murder. Prosecutors say that request from the sheriff’s office is a direct indication that they believe the murder was pre-meditated. Meanwhile, neighbors on the ground are telling us that right after the body was found, authorities began searching the home of the friend that Elizabeth was last seen playing with. You recall Elizabeth went missing as she was headed home from that friend’s house. Cops will not confirm the report, and it’s unclear what led them to search that home. There are two upcoming hearings in this case that could hold great significance. The first is a hearing tomorrow, where the court will decide if the suspect will remain at the juvenile detention center, or will be allowed to go home until the hearing scheduled for next month. Prosecutors will request the teen remain at the detention center. The other court date will be the big showdown: a certification hearing will be held on November 18 where the court will decide if the teen suspect will be charged as an adult or as a juvenile. Under Missouri law, children as young as 12 can be charged as adults with first degree murder, however, should the teen suspect face first degree murder in adult court, they won’t face the death penalty. Missouri Law does not allow someone younger then 16 years old to be sentenced to the death penalty. Also today, the family of Elizabeth Olten began the process of saying goodbye to their beloved child. Visitation for Elizabeth Olten was held today, the memorial is scheduled for tomorrow.

My prayers are with this family. I am deeply sorry for your loss. I hope some how soon, you are able to find peace. I can not even begin to imagine. May God Bless you and your family at this difficult time.

cathy Connally   October 27th, 2009 6:32 pm ET

I am so very sorry for your loss. i lost my child in a car pedestrian accident she was only 6 years old and I know how hard it was for me.
I can't imagine the loss you are going through. You have my sincere sympathy. She was a beautiful child even though i didn't know her, my prayers go out to you. I hope they make her murder supect pay dearly for what she has done to your wonderful child. She is with God and is an angel and will no longer suffer anymore.

tammy kwiatkowski   October 27th, 2009 7:00 pm ET

I cried when I heard this story as well as others, I hurt for this family,
it is so unbelivable that there are so many cruel people out there to take the life of an innocent person or child.

Barbara D.   October 27th, 2009 7:05 pm ET

Him going home should not be an option. If he did this to her, who's to say he doesn't have others on a list. I don't believe it was just random. He MUST stay at the center.

why should this 15 yr old teen be allowed to go home with her parents ? elizabeth parents will never have that moment again to spend with their daughter if u commit adult crime then this heartless teen should pay and give her the death penalty who cares i dont she shouldnt deserve to live no longer then past her court hearing

Sara McGinn   October 27th, 2009 7:53 pm ET

Maybe her body could have been found sooner. I'm wondering why the police didn't take dogs into the wooded area that she was found in from the get-go.

kim c   October 27th, 2009 8:28 pm ET

I so sorry to hear about the loss of your child. I cannot imagine what you and your family are going through.
I hope that the person(s) responsible for your loss spends a long time behind bars. Never gets out.

I just don't understand what is going on with these children today. If we impose harsher punishments maybe these kids will think before they act.

EILEEN   October 27th, 2009 8:31 pm ET

Why would a 15 year old girl Kill a 9 year old girl?
Maybe little Elizabeth saw this girl doing something she shouldn't have been doing and was going to tell. Who knows i really cant imagine why she would murder her.

Martha   October 27th, 2009 8:31 pm ET

This teenage girl should not be sent home. She is dangerous and seem as if she cannot control her impulses. I have to wonder how /why a 15 yr old is running around with a 9 yr old. This teen girl obviously has some major emotional or behavioral problems but that is no excuse for attacking someone else. My condolences to Elizabeth's family.

Keri   October 27th, 2009 8:32 pm ET

My thoughts and prayers are with Elizabeth's family at this time..I am also so saddended and angry at this horrific crime. I know that the girl who committed this crime is a juvenile, but at 15, you know right from wrong!!!! What is happenening to children? Are they just getting desensitized? Where do they begin to believe that there is no value to another's life?? There are too many stories like this lately, something needs to be done. God Bless Elizabeth and her family.

alvin hurley   October 27th, 2009 8:40 pm ET

was this 15 y/o girl a bully

Barbara   October 27th, 2009 8:43 pm ET

A 15 year old should NOT be put on trial as an adult. Ask anyone with children, even close to this age – they do not think or act with the mental capacity of an adult!

Owhnn Owhnn   October 27th, 2009 8:45 pm ET

Has anyone thought that the 15 year old girl charged with the murder of the 9 year old was working with one of the many sexual predators in the area? It would answer the question how she hid the body so well. The 15 year old could be a victim of the predator herself and used to lure the 9 year old to the offender who may have been waiting in the woods.

Debbie Radonich   October 27th, 2009 8:49 pm ET

Nancy I watch your show and love it. You are a great person and mom. It is so sad to see the killings of all these young children... they are children people.. No one deserves to be killed and most surely never a child... I pray they will not allow this 15 year old to go without an adult trial and the sentence suit the crime.. For the other ones just happened in the past months the same with all the killers.. They need to understand the country is not going to stand for this and if you do the crime, major major punishment to incurr..
Thanks for all you do for us...
Debbie

JOHN BALL   October 27th, 2009 8:50 pm ET

FROM A SOURCE CLOSE TO THE CASE. ELIZABETH OLTEN WAS LED TO THE WOODS BY THE 15 YEAR OLD SUSPECT AND STRANGLED TO DEATH BECAUSE SHE "WANTED TO KNOW WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO KILL SOMEONE". THE SUSPECT WAS ON DRUGS AND STATED SHE BURIED HER IN THE WOODS. THE REASON THEY COULDN'T FIND ELIZABETH SOONER IS THE CELL PHONE BATTERY DIED FROM EVERYONE CALLING IT. ALSO, IT HAD RAINED OVER 3 INCHES AND COVERED THE GRAVE SITE.

Sherry   October 27th, 2009 8:50 pm ET

I have a younger sister myself and i could never image this happening to her...exspecially if she considered this person a friend, saying that it also must have been someone that she knew and trusted. The thought of the family knowing and trusting this CHILD as well is just unbelievable to me. My prayers go out to both familys. I hope they can find peace during this difficult time. With that said, does anyone stop to think about our upcoming generations and how violent they have become and why? I know I was raise in a christian home with parents who did not hestitate to disapline me. Look at the goverment taking GOD out of schools and not allowing parents to do their jobs! Its a sad sad story.....

Bailey   October 27th, 2009 9:04 pm ET

I love your show nancy. I started watching it when I was 5 months pregenat. I was in the hospital with pre-term labor it was at 1 in the morning and nothing else was on so I watched your show. Ever since then, Ive been addicted to it.
Im going to have my daughter via c-section on friday october 30th, im abosolutley scaredd about my daughters saftey after seeing all these horrifying stories about children.
My heart and prayers go out to this little girls family. I think no matter what age, well if they are older than 12, if they murder some one they should be in jail for life. unless they are proved* mentally incompident.

Joy Cristoni   October 27th, 2009 9:06 pm ET

Nancy, I have a feeling from all that I have heard that maybe someone that helped put the rock show together that Morgan went to see saw her and found out how much she liked the rock group and may have told her that he or them could take her back stage or out to their bus to meet the band members and when she saw she was in too deep could not get out or maybe they gave her a drink that was laced with something like the date-rape drug. Thank you so much. Joy jcristoni@ gmailcom

Elizabeth   October 27th, 2009 9:07 pm ET

I'm So very sorry for these family"s My Prayers and love gose out to them.

I want to know when in world are these kids that Kill at such a young age going to pay as in Adult ( if the crim is normaly done by Adult's then it should be charged as one). john m   October 27th, 2009 9:18 pm ET

Nancy, my deepest sympathy to Elizabeth's family, friends, and her community! But don't you think we should slow down a bit on condemning the 15 year old when, at this point, we know so little about her and the circumstances under which she survived life? And yes, go slow on condemning her, the 15 year old's, family. The community in which these two young girls lived needs to be looked at very closely; they just might be found to bear much of the blame for this tragedy to these young lives.

Renee farside   October 27th, 2009 9:38 pm ET

It is sad that a child is being killed by another child. What is this world coming too and how can this happen. I'm so sorry for the family.

Annabelle   October 27th, 2009 9:43 pm ET

I'm sick over the ending of a beautiful, wonderful, darling life. She looks like such a princess and didn't deserve for her life to end like this.

I'm praying for her family.

Annabelle

Jacqueline Diane   October 27th, 2009 10:37 pm ET

What happened to Elizabeth is awful. My heart goes out to her family. But when will parents realize that it is up to them to protect their children? Nancy is asking where were the parents or family members who were raising the 15 year old who has been arrested for this horrible crime. Without knowing more about this case I don't feel that the blame for this girl's crime can be put on the people who raised her. When children become teenagers it's normal to give them some independence. When I was young my friends and I rode our bikes all over our town together. Our parents didn't see us for hours. Parents today need to wake up and realize that those days are over! Parents MUST take every precaution to keep their children safe. Thirty four yards is too far for a young child to walk home alone. I am an adult and when I give a friend a ride home I don't leave until that person is safely in their house. I simply don't understand why an adult didn't accompany Elizabeth home.

Mona   October 27th, 2009 10:47 pm ET

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. I just have to ask did this 15 yr old act a lone in this case or did some one older help her. She should not be tried as a juvenile when this obviously has been planned out.
I hope justice prevails for young Elizabeth.

Ruth Fox   October 27th, 2009 10:48 pm ET

My thoughts and prayers are with the family. I hope this person is put away so they can never hurt anyone else again. I think the US should have harsher punishments for sex offenders & murderers. Doesn't China or the Philippines execute the person immediately after court? Wouldn't this help deter others from similiar crimes?

ronald   October 27th, 2009 10:53 pm ET

this child knew her way arround the system and knows how to hide a body regardless of her age she needs to face life in prison. no matter shes a serial killer or not. straight a student or not

ronald   October 27th, 2009 10:55 pm ET

more kids will kill because theres no laws governing them they said we can do anything we want and no one can touch us. if was his kids getting murdered will he represent her as his client and so on no way its easy to blab its not his kids

ronald   October 27th, 2009 11:04 pm ET

now that this child found out what its like to kill someone lets see if can find out whats like to go jail for life

Tracey Jeffery   October 27th, 2009 11:06 pm ET

Holy Crap John Ball!!! Are you serious? Well if thats true that is a real "BOMBSHELL"! And it that is the case, well they better trial her as an Adult! We don't need anymore wanna be child serial killers on the loose! I don't know what you guys are going to do to stop this insanity! But you parents need to safe guard your kids more! And the laws need to be tougher. The death penality for those doing such horrible crimes to children!

debbie scott   October 27th, 2009 11:07 pm ET

My thoughts and prayers go out to the the family of the 9year old. this fifteen yr old should be tried as an adult and not let out of jail. I hope justice prevails for young elizabeth. may god bless your family.

Debbie

ronald   October 27th, 2009 11:10 pm ET

put the brat kid to life in prison and ask why she did it how she did it what her grades are how they lived or anything but put her in jail for doing it and will continue as a serial killer

I sit here with a tear and wonder about such a great lost to
to this family . I know this little girl is in heaven and the lord is by
her side.Things like these do not happen for a reason they
happen because there is so much hate in this world
I can say that my prayers are are with this family and I hope one
day the lord comes down from the heavens and takes care of
the good people of our world. The political people in our country
can write all the laws they want for allgood reasons but they can
not bring back the children that we have lost. God bless you and
your family and all the other people that have suffered such
tragidies

MB   October 27th, 2009 11:45 pm ET

Why wasn't this 15 yr. old in rehab if she was a druggie? Surely, her parents/teachers must have known.

I just feel numb. So many beautiful, innocent young children are being slaughtered, raped and killed!! I would be terrified to let my child out of my sight! NOWHERE is safe...not school, church, malls, parks, their own yards etc....It's like EVIL has just swooped down on America, and the little ones are the victims! Does anyone have an answer?? Something has got to be done before this killing rampage continues.

Rest peacefully, beauiful Elizabeth. May God hold your family and loved ones up.

ronald   October 27th, 2009 11:52 pm ET

go slow nothing she needs life in prison now not 20 years from now favortism is out of control like the highschool killing when they make a law for boys and not for girls theres gonna be agressive killings

ronald   October 27th, 2009 11:55 pm ET

15 years old is to old for a play mate its only loking for trouble with that age no matter what her background is or what nintendo she plays

Jack   October 27th, 2009 11:57 pm ET

This is a very sad story and my prayers go her and her family for tragic loss.

Janice   October 28th, 2009 12:14 am ET

To Barbara: Do you not think that a 15 year old does not know that it's WRONG to kill? If this 15 year old can commit a crime this horrific, she obviously knew the consequences if she got caught. She got caught – she needs to suffer as well. There's no plausible explanation, no defense, for commiting this crime. If I was on a jury and the evidence supported it, I would have no problem in giving her an adult sentence (which she of course will not get) based upon her age. She would likely be incarcerated until she reaches age 21. Then she can really go out and kill someone else as an adult. Why should another murder have to be committed?

Lindsay   October 28th, 2009 12:22 am ET

Dear Nancy,
Are there no signs of such a distrubed child?? A 15 year old doesn't just wake up one day and think "I want to know how it feels to kill someone"...I think this is definitely something that could of been prevented. Where were this 15 year old girls parents/gaurdians?? How was she able to lure Elizabeth into the woods?? And most of all how was this 15 year old girl able to live under the radar of being a threat to others and herself?? I beleive that at 15 years old you know right from wrong...I believe she should be tried as an adult and forced to get help...A 15 year old may not think to the full capacity of an adult but the basis of morals, laws, and ethics are enstilled. A 15 year old is able to evaluate their actions and accept the reprocussions. My heart goes out to Elizabeth Olten's family... This was such a devestating loss. Please throughout this all do not lose faith in people and most of all God!

AP   October 28th, 2009 12:22 am ET

I knew when I was 15 years old (and even younger) that killing someone was wrong. If you don't know that by that age, there is something terribly wrong with you. This isn't simply a 15 year old beating up another child but KILLING her! She needs to be locked up in a mental institute indefinitely. And I pray for this family- I cannot imagine losing my little girl.

Donna   October 28th, 2009 12:43 am ET

This just makes me sick:(

CB123   October 28th, 2009 1:07 am ET

Nancy,

This is the most horrific case I've ever seen.

The perp had a grave dug for Elizabeth.
The death was slow.
There was strangulation and stabbing involved.
The body was mutilated.
Elizabeth was dead by the time the mom called 911 at 7:00PM

Perp's parents completely dysfunctional....dad in prison...mom in/out of jail...grandparents had custody of perp....perp has three younger siblings...

Perp had history....local schools ignored signs....
UGLYUGLYUGLY crime...Thrill KILL. with hyper violence.
Local schools are a mess...violence has been an issue for years.

Elizabeth's father and older brother are in prison. They are dirtbag criminals....but nothing to do with this crime.

It's an awful awful thing.
God help us all.

jamie   October 28th, 2009 1:16 am ET

what is wrong with these kids a 15 year old girl murdered this poor girl what in the hell is the motive for this. where are the parents . whats happening to our kids there growing up to be monsters.

alana k   October 28th, 2009 2:46 am ET

Let's not blame the community and everyone else, let's blame a 15 year old who committed pre-meditated murder. Anyone who thinks a 15 year old doesn't understand what murder is is very naive indeed. If there were drugs involved, as is being alleged, then the parents do have culpability for not stepping in and doing what needs to be done, which we see happening every day. My prayers go out to the family, and every other family who is suffering over a lost child. God Help us!

RJ   October 28th, 2009 6:20 am ET

Just terrible but where was this girls parents> A 9 year old is hardly old enough to be walking over a mile to school! There should be charges brought up on the mother for allowing this to happen in the first place! UNFIT is all I can say!

Duane A. Webb   October 28th, 2009 8:02 am ET

Oh my...I can't believe it wasn't a man who did this! Can you believe that it was actually a female! Oh My GoD!!! You mean a man didn't do it – because it's always a man! Darn...I was looking forward to reading all the BLAHHH!!! BLAHH!!! GET THE MAN – GET ANY MAN – SEARCH THE GREAT AMERICAN OFFENDER REGISTRY AND CHOOSE ALIKELY CANDIDATE!!! EVEN IF HE DIDN'T DO IT – GET HIM AND ARREST HIM AND PLANT EVIDENCE AND STAGE A FALSE INVESTIGATION AND WRITE UP A BOGUS REPORT AND ARREST HIM AND CHARGE HIM AND GIVE HIM THE DEATH PENALTY!!! ROAR!! GET THAT MAN BECAUSE HE DID IT!! GET HIM!!! IT WAS HIM!!! Darn I can't believe a man didn't do this. I guess all the anti-male vigilantes won't be to happy about it.

Kelly (Orlando, FL)   October 28th, 2009 8:22 am ET

This makes me sick! This 15 year old needs to be locked up forever! How can someone hurt an innocent child? I just do not get it! My heart goes out to the families of these precious girls that have been murdered (Somer and Elizabeth). I am scared to death to even let my two year-old daughter out of my sight! What has this world come to?

Jennifer   October 28th, 2009 8:28 am ET

First let me say to the family..I am truly sorry and Iam certain that there are no words that any of us can say to help you right now. I myself am a Mother of four and am just sickened by all of this..From Haleigh to Somer to Elizabeth. I mean ok we were all taught not to talk to strangers however we now are not allowed to let our children play at their friends homes ? Or walk home from school? So should we just shelter them not let our children associate with others and home school them? Im sorry but I did not carry my children...birth them and enjoy them for ANYONE to think they can just take them from me. These killers out there..Must pay!!! I dont care what age or sex they are...If you kill one of mine all bets are off..an eye for an eye!! I will say a prayer for all of these families and the angels they lost..Iam sickened and saddened...

Linda Bates   October 28th, 2009 9:31 am ET

I agree that this 15 year old should be tried as an adult. 15 years old that kill know right from wrong. Crist look at all the 15 16 year old girls who have babies and their youth is over but they raise them with love. No way should she be out in 6 yrs, this is horrific she concealed body and please say it is premeditated. This little girl lost her life. Thanks Nancy these stories have got to break your heart this one tore mine apart to think that another child would do this. Thanks Nancy and hold your babies tight

Kim   October 28th, 2009 9:47 am ET

This is another sad, sad story in a string of them. My heart breaks everytime I hear of another wonderful child being taken. People we cannot leave our young children alone to walk or go anywhere. This world has changed. It is the sad reality that we have to be with them or have them in groups that stay close together. Please don't leave your children alone for a second.

sarah winters   October 28th, 2009 9:53 am ET

I am also deeply sorry for ur loss. i cant imainge the pain and the anger u are feeling. May god help u through this time. ur baby is an angel now who will always be with u. also whats up a 15 year old girl!! I think we need to start looking in the family of this 15 yr old

Becky   October 28th, 2009 10:02 am ET

My deepest sympathys go out to your family on the loss of your daughter. I can't imagine what you are going through and the hurt & sorrow you feel. May God bless your family and give you peace and help you to heal from your loss.

I hope in the upcoming months you can have some kind of closure knowing the person that took your daughter will get justice.

Your daughter is a beautiful young lady and is now safely in the hands of our Lord.

Becky   October 28th, 2009 10:09 am ET

Barbara

I'm amazed at you thinking a 15 yr old should not be tried as an adult. This 15 yr. old just took another life her actions destroyed several families and has put those families through complete hell. If you feel so strongly about this maybe you should let her play with your children.

This is not a child this is a criminal period. she has no emotions, no value for human life, a complete disregard for the common decency rules of life, respect for others, and how to cope properly in life. Regardless of this being the parents fault, family problems whatever that doesn't justify her actions in taking another life. Kids are killing kids and adults and could careless who it hurts, destroys, or affects including themselves just because they think I am a minor I will get a slap on the wrist. It is time they all be tried as adults. People have quit raising kids and are now raising monsters and turning them loose on innocent children that are being raised with morals and values.

angela kendall   October 28th, 2009 10:12 am ET

I have the deepest hopes for the family.. I hope they reach an understand that God is always with them and their daughter. NO matter what. Poor child.. How could a child deserve to be murdered? Never in my mind. May God bless this family, and everyone involved, even the murderer.

Ronda   October 28th, 2009 11:39 am ET

When will the legal system start executing criminals for senseless murders? I mean really, how many senseless murders does it take before we the people get a say in this. I could careless the murderer is a 15 year old miner, take her out. Rehab my foot! This child can NEVER be replaced and this family will be broken FOREVER. Lord I pray for justice.

Susan   October 28th, 2009 11:47 am ET

Amy   October 28th, 2009 11:52 am ET

My thoughts and prayers are with Elizabeth's family and the families of all other children taken away from them by these sick, sick, people. And I do include the 15 yr. old girl in that statment. I understand she is a juvenile, however, she is old enough to know right from wrong, especially to take another life?
I am a mother, and I do agree that this child's killer SHOULD be charged in an adult court.
Or is the justice system going to allow her to walk away with a slap on the wrist as they do with CHILD PREDITORS??
I am so very tired of hearing a new story every DAY of a child being taken, raped, and killed and the preditor gets NOTHING. I suppose our justice system will only make a change when people begin to form VIGILANTE MOBS to take care of these sickos themselves/ourselves!!
My heart goes out to these families. I know that these lovely children are with god and are angels looking over us all now.

AMANDA   October 28th, 2009 11:54 am ET

JUST IN ON KRCG WEBSITE.....THE 15 YEAR OLD GIRL WILL STAY IN CUSTODY UNTIL THE CERTIFICATION HEARING!!!!

Susan   October 28th, 2009 11:54 am ET

Nancy, I also just found the following. Looks like the suspect, 15 year old, is not going home to await the Nov. 18th hearing.

Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at 10:44 a.m.

COLE COUNTY - A teenage suspect in the slaying of a 9-year-old mid-Missouri girl will remain in secured detention until the certification hearing.

An attorney for the 15-year-old suspect waived a scheduled detention hearing Wednesday.

But Cole County Circuit Judge Jon Beetem did hear arguments on whether the public should be allowed at Nov. 18 certification hearing to determine whether the teen should be tried as an adult for the death of Elizabeth Olten. Beetem made no immediate ruling.

Funeral services for Elizabeth are scheduled for Wednesday afternoon at a Jefferson City church. She was found dead Friday in a wooded area near her St. Martins home, two days after she was reported missing.

Christine   October 28th, 2009 11:56 am ET

As a mother of six children between the ages of 4 and 18.... I have to ask, WTH is happening to our society , to our children? Children killing, raping, and committing other atrocities on what seems to be a national uptrend. This is sad.

I also have to reply to Barbara who stated that this child should NOT be charged as an adult. Yes she should and yes she does understand what she did. As a Mother and an author on this subject I can tell you with absolute certainty (at least in my mind and heart) she knew what she was doing was wrong as she was doing it. The fact that the body was well concealed leans me to believe this crime was committed with both malice and aforethought . In some ways committed better then many adult offenders that merely dump the bodies of their victims in the garbage or fields.

Understand, that this "child" managed to carry out a murder, Dispose of her victim in a manor that concealed it from discovery for days and most likely continued her life as normal while the search for the victim was ongoing. I am sorry, but that is not the mind of a child. As a matter of fact it stopped being the mind of a child the moment she carried out her plan and murdered.

Let the punishment fit the crime! Lets face it, until such a day comes that we as a society step up and make the punishments not worth the crimes for "children" its only going to get better. You don't really want to know what I feel is an appropriate punishment is for this young ADULT is.

Christine   October 28th, 2009 12:01 pm ET

Amending my comment, last paragraph should read

I cannot imagine how the parents of Elizabeth feel, I think I would just have to give up. On the other hand just think how the parents of the 15 year old feel, it is something i could not even imagine. God bless them all!

Jennifer   October 28th, 2009 12:37 pm ET

Is it possible she had help in this crime? It seems like a lot for a 15 yr old girl to be able to murder a 9 yr old without anyone seeing or hearing anything and hiding the body all by herself. But I know stranger things have happened. I do believe she should be charged as an adult. If she is charged as a juvenile, she will be released in a few years and who knows what she will do next. I know one of the Jonesboro killers was released at 21 and he is always on the news for committing more crimes. Of course they never lock him up for good because we are way too relaxed with our laws and we are putting killers back on the street left and right to commit more crimes. Poor child and poor family. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

AMANDA   October 28th, 2009 12:37 pm ET

RJ.....I hope you are talking about the parents of the 15 year old & not Elizabeths parents!!!! First of all she was not walking home from school, but from her friends house that was 1/4 (.25) mile away (actually 4-5 houses away) I live in the next county & I have been to St Martins many many times. It is a smaller community like ours. The sheriff should be answering questions like: Why no Amber Alert when a 9 year old is missing for 2 days who is scared of the dark & won't go into the woods by herself. Way to go Sheriff Greg White!!!! The 15 year old dosen't even live with her parents, so where are they??? Why haven't they been looked at??? She should be charged as an adult...she made an ADULT decision. She should have to face the consequences like an adult. She took a precious life!! God bless the Olten Family

annie   October 28th, 2009 1:05 pm ET

To Barbara – who thinks 15 yr olds should not be tried as adult –
This is not your typical 15 yr old ! She committed a pre meditated grisly murder!

casey   October 28th, 2009 1:30 pm ET

First of all Martha, if you would read the articles before you comment you would have known that elizabeth wasn't "running around with" a 15 year old... she was the older sister of Elizabeths friend... and have you stopped to think that maybe just maybe the 15 year old was asked to walk Elizabeth home because she was only 9.. i dont know that for a fact but i have asked my 15 year old to walk a younger friend of my kids home before, I'm sure if that is the case the person asking didn't know that this was going to happen...

And Barbara, Barbara, Barbara... I CANNOT believe that you would say something like that... well I am a mother and I can tell you that even if it were my child that did the killing there is no way to defend that, the girl DIED, she was MURDERED there is no other explanation, when the Police found her there she was not breathing correct? That means someone KILLED her... and I will bet MY own life that when this first came out and they had NO body and No suspect that you yourself were thinking it was some monster that had taken her , probably Raped her and they deserve to be put to death... because ME being a parent was thinking that... and just because i found out that it was a 15 year old GIRL instead of 45 year old MAN doesnt change my mind at all , actually it makes it a lil worse, with the exception that MAYBE nothing happened to her sexually... but she still deserves everything I hope she gets, PRE meditated MURDER is NO accident and like someone else said , since you feel this way maybe you and your kids can go visit her on visiting days at the Missouri State Penn (or where ever they go with women) ...

And to Elizabeth's family ... Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers!!

lena elliott   October 28th, 2009 2:17 pm ET

What is this world coming to????? why do children have to die, be , tortured and raped??????? How in gods name can people go om with there life after doing things like this to children???? How sad that we live on earth with such sick individuals!!!! Could be our neighbors, our friends, our familey..... you just dont know who to trust around our kids. WE as parents try to keep them safe, BUT THEY ARE NEVER SAFE!!!!!!!!!!

Danielle Martin   October 28th, 2009 3:03 pm ET

I dont think her body was there all that time because why didnt the dogs atleast smell her ??? If they searched there how could they not find her??? I think her body was moved there. And i dont think that girl worked alone she had help to move that body. Where the heck is this girs mother???

c   October 28th, 2009 3:23 pm ET

@Duane A. Webb= yes when we hear these crimes. most of us think it is a man who is the perp...and yes ALOT of us call for death/justice...however this case, and sandra cantu case is showing the female killer/and or perv as well...evil knows no gender boundaries, male or female. heck even look at your local sex offender registery and you will probably see a female face or two...

i can only speak for myself, and hopefully others share this sentiment, we are NOT on a man-hating witch hunt/death to any thing male because it HAD to be a man, that commited this or any crime, espeically involving kids.... we just want justice, even if it is dispensed to a female prep..

Pat Prewitt   October 28th, 2009 4:15 pm ET

There is something horribly wrong when a primary caregiver doesn't spend enough time with a 15-year old to notice there's a serious problem in the making. That much rage didn't happen overnight.
Maybe if we'd turn off the TV and get involved with our kids, families like the Olten's wouldn't have to suffer.
Our children are only on loan to us. If we screw it up, they have to live with it for the rest of their lives.

VIUOLA BRISCOE   October 28th, 2009 5:10 pm ET

this is a mad mad world, so sorry about her passing. what the heck going on our kids killing kids. the world is turning so evil in these last days. i could never take a nother one life. i give all my blessing to the family. i know GOD will give them a peace of mind, but i know it hurt, i lost my daughter by a drunk driver in 2001 and i am still hurting. you start to heal in so way. but you still have that open in your heart.it take tim to get over loseing your love ones, to lose youe baby o my GOD. she was just a baby, keeping the family in prayer.

Lesa   October 28th, 2009 5:42 pm ET

I first wanna say I am so sorry for the families loss as well. The 15 yr old girl
does deserve to be treated like an adult. I hope they lock her up an throw away the key............ She is not a normal child she hide the body so she knew what she was doing.......I wish she was 16 so she could be sentenced to more........... Life in prison with other murders is what she deserves............................

ronald   October 28th, 2009 6:53 pm ET

she killed the girl cause the law does not allow adult crimes to be charged for children and she knows how to get arround the system.

ronald   October 28th, 2009 6:57 pm ET

the answer is parents stop spoiling your kids and protecting them from life sentences for murder and sighn a bill to charge any child killer to adult jail

ronald   October 28th, 2009 7:02 pm ET

the kid knows right from wrong thats why she died like that thats why she expertly barried her like that kids have more brains then adults. its well planned for months thats why she knew the place well and practiced hiding her hate simply get the trust of a kid and then finishem simple as that

ronald   October 28th, 2009 7:05 pm ET

parents have nothing to do with this want to be killer anymore then you watch your own kids from your neighbors in your own back yard shes a smart kid she watch csi and how to do it and hide it

ronald   October 28th, 2009 7:56 pm ET

this serial killer will be out when shes 18 it is againts laws made by parents to not allow a child to spend jailtime over or 18 years of age i said 20 years ago kids will kill kids as the law passes for certain age and kids at age6 are going to kill

Mom of 2/Grandma of 2   October 28th, 2009 7:59 pm ET

To Bailey, young mother: Hope all will go well for you with your delivery. Having raised 2 girls and more recently helped raise two grandchildren, I know your fears firsthand. First of all, pray, pray, pray every day for their safety. Secondly, keep a tight rein on them and a close watch–don't listen to others who will call you overprotective, etc.–we never let our children/grandchildren even take the schoolbus–they were escorted and dropped off anywhere they went by a family member–an adult went to the movies with them even in middle school and sat near them–everybody thought we were nuts–they were not allowed to sleep over very often at anyone's house (everyone was welcome to visit ours) at least until the situation had been thoroughly checked out-it's a shame all of us can't relax and enjoy our childrens' childhoods like when I was a child, but we just have to be extra watchful–you can't control everything but you do what you feel in your heart is right and don't let anyone else talk you out of it–that said, DO enjoy your children–they are only young once–God Bless you and yours-our family's prayers go out to the little missing ones' families. They stay in our heart and thoughts.

ronald   October 28th, 2009 8:00 pm ET

the parents have nothing to do with the murderers that she secretly commited. its her own doing i hope she dident take a liking to feel whats like to kill or she'll never stop killing kids and adults and animals. or with an all girl group

ronald   October 28th, 2009 8:08 pm ET

this child no doubt have dead animals in the neighborehood from her and shes as guilty as men or women killers i ask you where were the parents when the 40 yearold man raped and killed other kids and adults sounds stupid right same as where the parents was of this spoild kid.

Teresa   October 28th, 2009 8:08 pm ET

WHAT WOULD HER MOTIVE BE??? I CAN'T UNDERSTAND THIS... IT'S CRAZY. HAD'NT HEARD ANYONE TALK ABOUT THIS YET...

ronald   October 28th, 2009 8:48 pm ET

who cares what you cousan went through and her issues she diserves life in prison like all men and women who have mental problems no excuse for her actions no matter what her life in school i about. i was molested and beaten in school and till today i never molest kids and yes i can getaway cause i have issues i went through. but i dont do that

ronald   October 28th, 2009 8:56 pm ET

she knew how to kill when to stop knowing when the person died if she never knew she would turn herself in or leave the body her house where can be seen the girl should come bck and haunt her for life

STEVE   October 29th, 2009 12:01 am ET

I READ THE FOLLOWING ON THE INTERNET:

"...It is also has been confirmed that the Elizabeth was stabbed several times strangled ,then her neck was sliced. The girl in custody in this alleged crime's name is *********. it is also known that the killer dug a grave the Fri before..."

IS ANY OF THIS TRUE?

del   October 29th, 2009 1:00 am ET

If anyone reads my comment I just want to say that we need to talk more to our kids I see a lot of parents ignoring their childrens behavior at very young ages, and with all the violent acts that our children are comitting we really need to look at are darling little angels and start talking to them about some of these topics: Gangs, drugs, rape, bullying, murder even and really get a grasp on whether they really truly know the difference between right and wrong. You know if the police come knocking on your door your first reaction is going to be not my child...but yes it very well could be your child!

Erica   October 29th, 2009 1:54 am ET

To those who are blaming the community and the schools:
I am a recent graduate of the same school system, these schools don't "ignore signs" and violence has not been an issue. All schools have fights and cliques, etc. whether big or small. But your talking adult violence. This girl pre-meditated the murder. She thought about it, she knew what she was doing. And she knew the consequences. And to those of you blame the community. Yes, an Amber-Alert should have been issued. But even if it had, by the time the family said she was missing, she had already been killed. And the community in which she was raised, in which I was raised, is not a violent one. St. Martins is a small, rural community. In the past it has been family-friendly and safe. And I'm sure it will be in the future. You cannot take this girl's actions and blame others for what she has done. She is 15. Almost old enough to get her driver's license. Definatly old enough to know better. I think she should be tried as a juvi and put the girl in a center where she can get HELP then try her again at 21. YES, I think she deserves to be punished for what she did. God forbid if that was my sister or even my child. But at 15 most can be helped and taught and guided. Even if the girl didn't think what she did was wrong, hopefully one day she will realize.
To Danielle Martin: The woods in which Elizabeth was found is DEEPLY wooded. The brush is thick, the grass is tall and the terrain is hilly. It's very easy to get lost in there. Also, I'm pretty sure it rained very heavily the day she went missing and the next.

Wanda Wellman   October 29th, 2009 3:23 am ET

Hi Nancy–I watch your show all the time @ I want to thank you for being the voice of these sweet victims. You are a beautiful person inside @ out. Your twins are just beautiful, too!! I want to let all of the ones who have lost they're precious little ones how very sorry that I am for them. It would be horrible to lose a child!! I can totally understand your comment tonight about how protective you are of your precious twins. When my son was little [from the time he was born until age 16 when he got his license @ even beyond] I was told that I was over protective of him. I don't regret being that way at all!! He is 31 now @ married to a wonderful woman. They live in Paris.Tx. @ are both band directers with the Paris school district. He has grown into a very well rounded young man [which I am very proud of!!!!] From the time that he was in kindergarten until he got his license, I took him to school @ picked him up from school I worked the [graveyard shift so that I could do that.] His dad left when Shawn was around age 5 [I stayed home with him until his dad left @ I had to go back to work then.] I made sure that I could be there for him @ spend time with him. I even worked it out so that I could go with him on school trips as an adult helper[Teachers told me that they saw me more than they did any of the other parents, but they were glad that I was willing to help out.] Don't think that you are too over protective because you're NOT!!!! Things are much worse now than they were when my son was growing up.
I want to also comment on this 15 year old girl that thought it was alright to take young Elizabeth's life, because it WAS'NT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In my opnion she should be tryed as an ADULT because she knew what she was doing. Now, because of what she did, Elizabeth's family is going through so much PAIN that no one should have to go through!!!!

Robin Sanders   October 29th, 2009 9:18 am ET

I was already thinking the 15 year old should be tried as an adult, but if CB123 is right , I surely believe she does. So sorry for the family. I find myself cautioning my girls all the time because of these crimes. In these times, you can not be too careful. Nancy, we, here in macon, love you and are so proud af all you stand for, especially in defending these children. God bless you girl, and those two babies!

Valerie B   October 29th, 2009 9:19 am ET

Lets pray for our children. They are so precious and don't deserve this.I think the 15 year old should be charged as an adult.

Lou   October 29th, 2009 11:24 am ET

The accused teen is at least a second generation dysfunctional. She carries the scars of those who came before her. She never had an opportunity to succeed.
Some will argue "Bad Seed," David's Triangle, others, nature vs nurture.
Too many generations of doing without moral upbringing result in increased and level of violence.
It takes a great deal of patience and persistence to train an animal...even more to provide a growing child with respectability, responsibility and accountability.
With so many unhappy teens, it is almost amazing there has not been more of them striking out for attention, help and protection.
The accused was a victim too, for years, before committing this hideous crime.

joann   October 29th, 2009 12:33 pm ET

LET THERE BE JUSTICE AND THIS 15 YEAR OLD GIRL STAY IN JAIL OR DIE FOR THE DEATH OF THIS 9 YEAR OLD GIRL,WHO DIDN'T ASK TO DIE !!!!!

Noreen   October 29th, 2009 2:00 pm ET

My condolences and love to the family of Elizabeth. This is a horrific crime and NEEDS to remain in the headlines. Children killing children is not acceptable and we need to learn from this to correct the path of our society and youth. There are many locally who are trying to silence people from talking about this on the web sphere; the local reporting has been atrocious. None of the pressers have been covered live, nor was Elizabeth's visitation or funeral. It is taking local media upwards of 24 hours to post anything developments on this case. Why the concentrated effort to keep this quiet? The High School where the suspect attended releases a statement that "it did not happen on school property". What is wrong with them? Where is the counselling and condolences? There is something far more serious going on here and god bless Nancy for being an advocate for Elizabeth. Without national coverage the local media would have let this fizzle out. As for the suspect not receiving a fair trial due to coverage. Statements like this negate the intelligence of everyone and the ability of the law abiding who will proceed fairly as a jury. If the crime were not committed the coverage would not be an issue. Where was the fair trial for Elizabeth when she was being murdered?

Noreen   October 29th, 2009 2:01 pm ET

Is the local media in Jefferson City doing a horrible job of covering Elizabeth's case because she is the Daughter of Dale Olten who is a POI in the disappearance of Jasmine Haslag?

Noreen   October 29th, 2009 2:01 pm ET

Why are some locals outraged about the national coverage of this Case. What are they trying to hide?

paintdancer   October 29th, 2009 3:04 pm ET

The girl that is accused of the killing is obviously very sick as a result of her upbringing. Saw her tweets on Twitter through Scared Monkeys.com and she is obviously mentally disturbed and probably on drugs. Yet only five years ago she was an honor student that received an award. Sadly, Elizabeth's father and brother are in jail and Elizabeth's family had their own problems with drugs and weapons and jail even before this happened. Weirdly, there has been allegations that Elizabeth's father has been connected to the disappearance of a young woman just two years ago. One of the women who comforted Elizabeth's family during this tragedy was the mother of the young woman who's now believed to be dead and was said to live with Elizabeth's dad before she went missing and he went to jail. You've got to wonder about this town with all this crime and tragedy. Also, the high school journalism teacher of the alleged killer committed suicide on Monday. Did he see something in this disturbed teen's writing to alert him to the crime? Is he the one that went to the police and then felt so bad about what he did that he killed himself? I feel sorry for both Elizabeth and the alleged killer as they are both victims as a result of their dysfunctional families and today's drug culture. Both of these girls have parents in jail, for heaven's sake. Get the drugs and "good" vampires out of the mix and get God and goodness and family life back into the picture and we will hear a lot less of these tragedies. It's a sick society we are living in, thanks to sin and evil choices. Anyone who does not believe the devil is having a hey-day needs to realize how many times the word demon is listed in the bible. BTW, I picked all this info up myself today, from the net, after a few hours of research. It's out there if you want the facts. But I think the police are right to keep these names out of the news since there seem to be so many inter-connections that could affect the outcome of the case. Hopefully the truth will all come out, and justice will be served. But maybe not on Earth.

ronald   October 29th, 2009 7:30 pm ET

i think the girl was murdered at the home in the backyard kepped there then dumped after the search was over

ronald   October 29th, 2009 7:33 pm ET

ronald   October 29th, 2009 7:38 pm ET

ronald   October 29th, 2009 7:44 pm ET

her motive was to see if she can kil another little person after seeing she succeeded in killing animals

ronald   October 29th, 2009 7:47 pm ET

if it is true the girl was knocked out first that would exlaine no blood lost its eas y to do do it everyday then one day dont let go simple as that

ronald   October 29th, 2009 8:00 pm ET

i dont care what she watches i dont care what the voices said i dont care why she killed this kid but all i want is her life sentence for doing it. and let other kids lknow if she went who are others younger then her. a 10 yearold murdred a baby and another girl she is a book writer who got out of jail at 21 but not for the other murder

marge   October 30th, 2009 3:00 am ET

Sounds like Ronald should be named a POI. I don't get this dude, well anyway, The 15 year old needs to be tried as an adult, no question about it. i AM SO SICK OF SEEING KIDS KILLING, RAPING AND HURTING other kids. It needs to stop now. People need to get out of the materialistic attitudes and start caring more about our children. PUT THE CHILDREN FIRST!!! too many parents now in days put there own happiness above there kids , we live in a ME society and now we are just beginning to see the results. So thank you to all the people who couldn't call off work one day to stay with your sick kid at home, thanks to the people, who got bored at home and had to get out of the house to work, thanks to the people that couldn't give there marriage one last try for the kids sake, thanks to the people that just had to have it all, but couldn't without 2 incomes, Thanks to the people that couldn't help your kids with a homework assignment because you where too tired. Who am i describing? You and me, we are too blame. Everyone needs to look at there lives and see and ask yourself am i putting myself before my kids? All kids want is love and alot of people can't even do that and it doesn't require 2 incomes, but rather 1 heart.

ronald   October 30th, 2009 4:17 pm ET

marge how many kids and parents murdered for not staying home for a day. dont think you can count that high. you people along with judges making all the excuses for kid murderes nintendos, drugs, tv, wanting to see whats like to kill if she liked it then theres no stopping her when she gets out

Radical   November 14th, 2009 1:35 pm ET

i know the 15yr old she had problems with cutting herself i feel like a complete idion not telling ppl what she was doing to herself and all and even seeing the writtings she posted on twitter and youtube, the video aswell. i really didnt want to get involved even thou she told me she wanted to kill someone, i should of told someone but i tried to get her help once and she said no, i also had the same problem with cutting myself and wanting to kill my uncle for what he did to me. this could have been stoped but i am truly sorry it happened and i kinda blame myself for not telling an adult about what she was saying and writting and the videos.

Jennifer   November 17th, 2009 11:51 am ET

I wish that I was allowed to say something on this case, that people just didn't see me as a teenage girl. I know the killer I was best friends with her for several years. I can't even wrap my mind around how she could do such a thing. I lay in bed and just wonder how I could have been friends with a killer. Her twin brothers and little sister must be so upset. Her sister is the same age as mine....The killer was invited to my halloween party and i had told her she couldn't come a few days after I told her she could...because she offered me drugs and to go to a part...im not that kind of girl. I have my life ahead of me. My 16th birthday is on thanksgiving and im not about to do something stupid. I have been best friends with this girl since 6th grade in middle school till now a sophomore in highschool. She was always a little bit odd but that was just how she is. I'll never forget the day i got a phone call telling me what she had done. I just want to let everyone know...u don't know what the people around u will always do but u know what u can prevent from happening from your own actions. Be safe and be content with what u have now, u never know when something will make ur life come to a halt.
R.I.P Elizabeth Olten you will be greatly missed....and the killers sister will miss u greatly u were best friends and im sure she will never forget u

Jennifer

ronald   November 18th, 2009 6:08 pm ET

no excuses she was going to kill anyway rather herself or somebody else same gos for you she knew right from wrong thats why she chose not to get help. she can cut herself anytime she want its her body but when she did this to someone else she blew it now she needs life in prison

ronald   November 19th, 2009 6:51 pm ET

happy birthday looks like ya got hell of a birthday. odd or not they always kill and its just the beginning more younger the killers will be if 15 is old enough. to me all ages no matter what they are should be tried as adults when they grow up then the'll understand why they are there. i hope she enjoid killing the girl cause she can never kill again for the rest of her life. the judge should tell her i always wondered what it would feel like sending a kid to lif in prison.
