Cops digging for more bodies

Posted: 03:52 PM ET

Investigators continue digging at the home of Anthony Sowell today after finding at least 4 more bodies inside the home yesterday. This brings the count to 10 bodies found and there is potential for more as authorities begin to go through the walls, floors, and ceilings of the home today. Police are hoping there are no other bodies at the home, but are not ruling anything out after their gruesome discovery yesterday of the 4 additional bodies buried in the backyard, as well as a human skull uncovered in the basement.

Anthony Sowell
Anthony Sowell

That skull was found yesterday wrapped in a paper bag in a bucket in the basement …police will not say if this is the head of one of the 10 victims already found, or another dead person whose full body has yet to be unearthed. Shortly after the discovery of the bodies yesterday, police charged the 50 year old Sowell with 5 counts of aggravated murder. The former marine was also charged with rape, felonious assault, and kidnapping. He appeared before a judge this morning for arraignment where his bond was denied.

Authorities have revealed the cause of death for 5 of the women was strangulation, but how the other 5 were killed remains unknown. The condition of the bodies found at the home has made obtaining official identification and determining cause of death difficult for the coroner’s office. As of now, none of the bodies have been identified, as the families of the missing people in the area wait with bated breath to find out if one of the bodies found was their missing loved one.

I have far too many words for this post. What I am able to say simply is....This is sick. Absolutely frightening that we have people in the world who are so evil.

Carmen Mills   November 4th, 2009 4:38 pm ET

Wonder what would have happened if this criminal had been a WOMAN ex-con, who had been serially castrated men?

First, do you think she would have:-

1. Lived to receive a "fair" trial?
2. If she had, do you think she would have lived-out her jail time?
3. If – by some miracle she had again, do you think – AS IN THIS CASE, that the MALE POLICE WHO KNEW WHAT SHE HAD DONE, AND WHOSE JOB IT WAS TO CHECK HER STATUS...would have "MISSED" anything "STRANGE" about that Woman?

HELL no!!!! We ALL know that the POLICE WOULD HAVE – hourly, daily, weekly, yearly...MADE THIS WOMAN'S LIFE A LIVING HELL!

NO WAY could she have offended again......FAR LESS 10 or more times.

Just goes to...CONFIRM: America is just a glorified Boys' Club.

Donna   November 4th, 2009 4:42 pm ET

Nancy,
With this man dismembering bodies, and living so close to the sausage/head cheese factory, is it possible that any of these bodies from the beginning could have been taken and ground up? Have the officials thought about investigating this plant?

KIM   November 4th, 2009 5:56 pm ET

truthtold80   November 4th, 2009 8:16 pm ET

I understand everybody outraged, but it just go to show us all that the authorities need to keep an eye ONLY ON THE MOST DANGEROUS of these SEX OFFENDERS. Those will be the ones that are on parole or probation. There isn't enough law personnel to monitor over 650,000 sex offenders. You can come up with all the laws that we want to to toughen but in every state sex offenders (no matter what sex crime) outnumber law enforcement and if you are a sex offender you should be outraged also because it is people like him or garrido that cause you not to be able to live normal lives. Thanks

Melissa   November 4th, 2009 8:49 pm ET

Did this guy own or rent his home? Just wondering why the landlord never noticed anything.

Jabreel Chisley   November 4th, 2009 9:04 pm ET

As a resident of Cuyahoga County, i think that the Sheriff department needs to be reviewed by the Ohio State AG, because if the neighbors smelled it from one street over how come the deputies who did the offended location verification didn't smell the decomposing bodies in sowells home. Thank god CDP caught him when they did though, because the man lives around 10 schools, one being a high school which is only 4 minutes away.

mike   November 4th, 2009 9:37 pm ET

nancy this guys not crazy he is insane

Lori S.   November 4th, 2009 9:41 pm ET

This murdering pervert had to have been on probation for his earlier crime. Why didn't his probation officer check on him INSIDE HIS HOME??? The odor of a decaying body CANNOT be confused with sausage manufacturing!

When are OUR paid officials going to start doing their jobs? The police chief has shown no remorse for not investigating the disappearances of these poor ladies prior to this discovery. He and his department's "concern" after the fact should not be accepted by the citizens! If anyone else showed such disregard of job responsibilities they would be fired!

katrina   November 4th, 2009 9:42 pm ET

omg kick that lawyer off the show ! did he say that "they havn't proven that he did it yet" he is fired!!!! what about the last rape victim that reported him to the police? i heard that it took 38 or 39 days for the police to get there. was someone killed between the time of police report and when the actually arrested him??? someone should be fired.

Teri Kasten   November 4th, 2009 9:43 pm ET

Hi Nancy:

I'm wondering if that creep owns the home, or who owns it? Is it a 2 unit home, if so, who else lived there?

mike   November 4th, 2009 9:49 pm ET

this is why the sex offender laws need to be changed. we do not need people on the offender web site that had sex with there girlfriend when they were 19 and the girl was 17. thats a waste of law enforcement time and unfairly makes them look like perverts that rape children when they are not. this web site should only be for hardcore sex offenders that are high risk to repeat agian. why cant anyone see that. i know none of the judges with younger wives are in jail or any of your nieghbors who had a high school sweetheart that was 2 years younger.at some piont they were sex offenders then. its all B.S. someone needs to start sex offender registry reform so it is true sex offenders. everyone in the world that had sex before 18 is or was a victim of a sex crime right now unless the couple was born on the same day.

Barbie   November 4th, 2009 10:14 pm ET

The home where these bodies have been found is a two-story, belonging to Sowell's stepmother. But apparently he has been stowing bodies on all floors of the building. Is his stepmother still living, where is she, and how are the household expenses being paid since he is not working?

Donnie Robins   November 4th, 2009 10:36 pm ET

Would you please, the next time you refer to this sick piece of garbage named Anythony Sowell, would you please stop saying "former Marine" He may have been a Marine but he did not follow their core values of honor, courage and committment. This piece of garbage is no longer a "former Marine", he is a sick blood thirsty murderer and rapest who should no longer have the name Marine attached to him. It puts a blotch on the Marine Corp that should not be there.

Maggie Picot   November 4th, 2009 10:44 pm ET

Yes America, this is what drives people cracy, just thinking how can this be happening in our communities. With evil's like those walking the earth we don't need hell nowhere else. Hell is right here on earth.

People like those are very Mentally ill ,but instead of doing a simple psychological and mental evaluation and trust them to do 15 years in prison and them allowed them to go home on parole that has never worked. That does not do any justice to the victims. We need legislation to stop this predators from causing anymore rampage by giving them an injection that would put them all out of business.

Sexual offenders have no cure now and would have no cure any time soon. Can the legislation get it!? How many more victims we need ?How many parents have to suffer before the legislation smell the coffee and become part of the solution? Enough is enough. I bet that if this crimes happened to a daughter of one of them, we will see real results effective immediatelly, If you look around most often times the victims of this crimes are not wealthy. If it was not for Nancy that keeps bringing this cases to our viewers ,it will go unnotice like hundreds of the same cases around the country. That is the reason that I take my time to write this comment to support Nancy in her quest to bring them to justice. Thank you Nancy

david   November 5th, 2009 12:00 am ET

"...if you are a sex offender you should be outraged also because it is people like him or garrido that cause you not to be able to live normal lives."

Right... because sex offenders didn't do anything in the first place that would cause them to not be able to live normal lives? ... People are stupid and ignorant, and you are a great example of that.

Scary truth   November 5th, 2009 12:19 am ET

I'm sad to say that it is not a shock that he was a member of the military. He must have started out some where preying on women! If he did have a record while in they military will cover it up. He has the eyes of the same sick man that raped me, however the miltiary let that man retire and only charged him with harrassment. I'm in fear that in a few more years I will see that man on the news in this same sitation, makes me sick. Once allowed to get away with it or even charged – pretators will not stop!

joe yorio   November 5th, 2009 1:44 am ET

sex offenders we should not let these people out ofjail, these crimes will keep will going on till these judges give criminals life.people in jail don't deserve .a second chance ,wake up judges if you want to give them a second chance let them live next store to you, they should cut it off

Tracey   November 5th, 2009 7:08 am ET

i dont say its right 2 sell drugs but when they get caught there done, an this crazy guy is in court to see if hes guilty or crazy, he had dead bodies in his house, "WTF" u think he wuz doin!!!!!! The prisons need to let the traffic offenders, an non-violent people out, an put away the real bad people!!!!!!!

kit-kat   November 5th, 2009 7:32 am ET

I guess no one else on the cable networks will admit to it, so I will. These women, all African American were left to die for 3 years because the police department deemed them unworthy of saving! Look at their surrounding neighborhood: if this were to happen in a suburb, with all of the missing women were white, there would have been more swifter action taken by the police department! To this disgusting act of RACIAL PROFILING, the police chief should be fired and the families of these women should sue the city of Cleveland for every single PENNY to it's name! It's time for the media to stop dragging it's feet and call it like it is!

Because these women were all black, in a poor neighborhood, this city thought the worst of them and felt that the world would be much better without them! This city police department chose who they didn't want to help, the media in that city chose who the didn't want to help! "Give them a 15 second sound-bite." As if that's will be enough to jog anyone's memory!

Why is it that when a child goes missing, presuming it is the preferred race, the police will do a sweep of all known sex offenders in that neighborhood and surrounding city. When it's a child or woman of an undesired race, the police immediately profile them: "She was doing drugs, partying, gang banging, prostituting herself...we have better things to do with our time." The police racial profiling as a way NOT to help these women, their families, and their neighborhood!

I wish that the US Attorney General takes a look at this case, place in some policy changes. These bigots in Cleveland Ohio need to be more educated in the ABSOLUTE FACT THAT THEY ARE TO SERVE & PROTECT EVERYONE!!!!!

To those in HLN and CNN, stop the BS with calling these experts and lawyers and CALL IT LIKE IT IS!!! STOP DRAGGING YOUR FEET AND CALL IT LIKE IT IS!!!

Stacy   November 5th, 2009 10:47 am ET

Just sick!! Praying for all the victims families.

Chyna   November 5th, 2009 11:23 am ET

DISCUSTING! thats all. sick crule and nasty.

Crystal   November 5th, 2009 12:00 pm ET

Just another reason to immediately execute anyone convicted of rape. He would have been dead a long time ago and none of this would be happening.

christa   November 5th, 2009 1:15 pm ET

You said a council member of the City of Cleveland has issues with the police investigation. This councilman has issues because of his own doing, for driving drunk and being stopped by police and losing his driving privilege for some time. If this councilman was as interested as he said he was about the smell in that area why did'nt he talk to his boss the mayor and had it investigated. Mr.Reed did not talk to the news media when it was about himself ( driving under the influence ), but now he wants to be on the national news. I do not say that our police dept is outstanding they are not, but he should not talk about them, when he has so many issues himself.

Elaine   November 5th, 2009 3:46 pm ET

It is 2009 and African American women are still devalued in America! Beatings, rapes, kidnappings, murders, etc. This psychopath in Cleveland is not the only serial killer running loose, in North Carolina 7 bodies have been found of murdered women. These women have been reported missing for years by their families. I live in North Carolina and the local news stations just aired this story three to four months ago. These women had been reported missing from the same area for years. This should have been a major red flag to police and city officials. The community is outraged!

Meika   November 5th, 2009 4:12 pm ET

Nancy,

When the probation officers came by to check on Sowell did they not report a foul odor coming from within the home? The police officers who went to serve the warrant, did they not notice a foul stench? This man is not crazy, I know crazy, I work with crazy people, and this man is INSANE. He lived in a home with dead bodies. He buried bodies in his backyard. He's an ex-marine, a trained murderer! Military officials should offer counseling for these service men/women so that they return to society with a clear state of mind. My friends and co-workers laugh at me about doing background checks on the men I date and the people I meet and socialize with. No one is safe. People are mean in this world. Kidnapping, killing, beating, raping, children and women this is ridiculous. Everyone is responsible, the community, the city officials, the police. When this story is not being aired on the news anymore the community has to continue to progress and move forward. Push out the drug dealers, junkies, rapist, prostitutes, etc. Clean up YOUR communities. Do not wait for others to come into your community to do so.

pam   November 5th, 2009 4:49 pm ET

Nancy i just want to know what the neighbors thought when he was doing all that digging in his yard. As you can see there was no flowers planted .Some one had to see him outside in the yard look at the bodies that are being dug up this man is really sick

Sion Mangione   November 5th, 2009 5:06 pm ET

Did the police ever alert the public that african american women have been reported missing in a record number in the Cleveland area, and that women of color should be on alert especially when traveling alone? Why wasn't the public on notice ? I also feel that dna should be a requirement of all sex offenders prior and currently in the data base ,and we as women of all nationalities need to stand together to change the laws when it comes to child molesters and sex offeenders. It is sickening that the laws for the justice system for crimes against women and children have been founded by men.these sex offenders homes should be searched monthly and news letters should been sent out to the community where they reside after all it is public record and we all should be notified every time these monsters are released.

Stasey   November 5th, 2009 5:12 pm ET

A three story home that smells like death....seems like someone would have at least called it in to be investigated.

Jackie W.   November 5th, 2009 5:36 pm ET

What a sick world we live in. What the heck is wrong with these people?

caligirl   November 5th, 2009 6:32 pm ET

Reminds me of that old movie "Motel Hell", that is why I am a vegetarian!!

Pamela Greene   November 5th, 2009 8:50 pm ET

Hello Nancy,
In our Akron Beacon Journal it was reported that this was a 3 story home that was in his families name. When he was released from prision 2005 his step-mother lived on the first floor and he lived on the 3rd floor. He was upset because he didn't feel that she should own the home. She was sickly and unable to climb the stairs in order to check on him. His brother suspects that she to is a victim of these crimes. However, a neighbor states that she is in a nursing home.
The man smoked crack and drank and would perswade women to come and have a drink with him.
It leads me to wonder if these woman were using drugs/alcohol to be enticed by such a low life? As for addiction there is the fact of
"blackouts". Who is to say these crimes weren't committed during the blackout period?
People in the depressed area of town he lived in have much different ways of lifestyles then most. Drugs & alcohol relieve pain for most addicts, and even those who engage in this behavior.
No job, felony, no car but he must have had some charm to fall
upon these women who also walked the streets and looked for ways to escape from their reality.

Debra Marie Barnes   November 5th, 2009 10:10 pm ET

I am a resident of cleveland and an african american female. I know firsthand how callous Cleveland Police Department can be with victims within the African American community here. They don't care, they brush it off because some of these people have drug issues, as if they deserve the bad treatment they get because of their problem. That's why a lot of women don't come forward. Cleveland police has a history of being non caring of african american females, especially those with drug problems. All I know is, none of these ladies deserve to die like that. The police are trying to save face, but they know that they dropped the ball on this one. Is this going to make a difference how they treat the african american community? Is this tragedy going to spur them to pay more attention to what is going on? If past history serves itself here in Cleveland. I think not. Us African Americans, who are Clevelanders living in the inner city will still be left twisting in the wind. Cleveland Police has no regard for us, except to arrest us. They are very quick to put us in jail, not so quick, when we ask for help.

Debra Marie Barnes   November 5th, 2009 10:12 pm ET

I would like to make a correction: what i meant to say was these ladies did not deserve to die like that! Being african american female with 3 daughters, I am outraged, horrified and disgusted with Cleveland Police.

Debra Marie Barnes   November 5th, 2009 10:17 pm ET

In response to the comment from Pamela Greene: what Anthony Sowell provided was a safe haven for these women and others to use their drugs. He's not a nice looking man at all. He would have scared me if I seen him on the street. He probably offered these ladies drugs, alcohol, etc. And when he got them alone, watch out! This man was in marine corps, so he was trained in hand-to-hand combat, so it was probably quite easy for him to overpower these ladies. He endeared himself to them, then killed them. He had a low opinion of these ladies. After all, one who survived, said that if he killed her, no would give a damn, He had become more aggressive because he thought he would not get caught. He had been getting away with it since he got out of prison in 2005.

Brandi G.   November 6th, 2009 12:29 pm ET

My first thought when I seen a picture of this "demon", he looks like a pitbull. His eyes are SO evil looking, I wouldn't trust him at all if I ever met him.

I've obviously never smelt a dead human body before, but lastnight on your show, I heard that people in the neighbor hood were complaning of the smells from the house, how would they know it was human? Do humans give off different chemicals once deceased then an animal? I know Animals and old meat smell are totally different, but an animal and a human give off different odors?

Just reminds me of the Casey Anthony case when the Grandmother smelt that odor and knew it wasn't "normal"...
So I wonder if its instict to smell a decaying human body. ??

I just pray for all the families going through this. May God be with you all and God Bless xx

Brandi G.   November 6th, 2009 12:33 pm ET

Or the Movie Haunting in Conneticut....but its Haunting in Ohio!!
FREAKY!!!!

E.D.   November 6th, 2009 1:17 pm ET

everyone says cut it off, there's no doubt in my mind that serious sex offenders will cont. to offend, however I don't think cutting their member is the solution I think they would still rape people just find other ways and other things to do it with. A sex offender cant control their urges and I don't think it comes from their stuff. Their mentally ill and should be put down like a mad dog.

Leigh   November 6th, 2009 1:27 pm ET

For anyone to make this into a sexist issue is completely off base and should be locked in the same cell as this man. Why turn a horrible situation into a worse one? Why is it that everytime something bad happens the reactions become more detrimental then the situation in the first place. This man is sick in the head and never should see the light of day again, but i cant imagine a woman being treated any differently in this case. Its not like parole officers are cracking down hard on their female offenders and not their male offenders. They do the same lousy job to everyone. I know personally someone on probabtion who can mail a check and form and everything is fine so he is still using drugs and everything that the probation is designed to stop

Joseph barber   November 7th, 2009 11:33 pm ET

they need to check all his addresses he lived at for more bodies

NoPatience   November 8th, 2009 2:24 pm ET

We don't have time to point fingers anymore. We don't have time for this. My community, the BLACK community has enough media outlets of its own in 2009. We need to put pressure on outlets like BET, Black Voices, Essence, Oprah, ALL THE BLACK RADIO STATIONS, media owners like Kathy Hughes, the folks that own Black Enterprise, etc to start spreading the word. I subscribe to the Black and Missing website and read it every single day. We need to do this on our own folks. At this point, I'm just sick and tired of the finger pointing. Is their racism? Of course there is – but we don't have the time for this argument. We have all got to pick up the banner for ourselves and get the word out. I blame the black media more than that white media – sorry – but I do. Let's do something with all this anger and start finding our people. no one is going to care but us – so its up to us.

There are also women missing in North Carolina – the circumstances are the same as Cleveland. I don't think the black community can afford to wait on anyone else in the media-we need to hold our own media even more accountable. I dont' care about the finger pointing at this point – all I care is that this does not happen again.

Carol   November 8th, 2009 9:43 pm ET

Race and social status is why this maggot was able to kill so many women. If these women had been any other race, and the killer of any other social status, this killing spree would have ended long ago. It’s a shame that Africa-American women can be raped and murdered in large numbers with all the information of the suspect available, and nothing done. Society (and the media) only cares for a select group of victims.

proudmommyof3   November 9th, 2009 12:03 am ET

i cant believe this... this is so freakin sad..

tabitha bateman   November 9th, 2009 1:57 am ET

god bless the families who are going through this..Im praying for all the families. This evil man should feel the pain ....

LT   November 9th, 2009 1:03 pm ET

I like how they always throw in that a felon is a Marine or Soldier. Nice........ Good impression of what 99.9999999 % of our troops are like huh ? They never mention he worked at a burger world or cut grass for a living. Nah, that would be boring.

Debra Marie Barnes   November 9th, 2009 3:31 pm ET

I am posting the most current information. As of this afternoon, the police are taking cadaver dogs to the abondoned homes in the area, to see if they can find more bodies. The investigation has now intensified to include unsolved crimes in other countries. Sowell was a marine. I also know that CA is watching this closely. The FBI are looking at other cases to see if Sowell has a connection. Being here in Cleveland and watching the grief of the families has been horrifying. There are still bodies unidentified.

patricia biggers   November 19th, 2009 2:40 pm ET

i think the system has lost there mind, parolofficers are not doing their JOB .WE AS A PEOPLE NEED TO TAKE A STAND AS A PEOPLE. from my understanding while incarerated his behavior was very unstable, thats why i cant understand how come he wasnt monitor more closely. we as a community must lookout for eachother.nancey keep up the wonderful job in keeping us inform. And may God bless this world and all that dwells in it ,this are the last days before judgement day .i truly believe these are our last days because their nothing but evilness all around us . I will keep praying for peace and love for all nations. thank you for allowing me to share.
