Baby Shannon Found Alive in Box!

Posted: 11:43 AM ET

The 7-month-old who went missing on Halloween has been found safely. The baby, Shannon Dedrick, was found in a 2×3 foot cedar box under the bed of her babysitter.

The babysitter, Susan Baker watched the tot for about two months, once sent an email to the governor of Florida concerned about the welfare of the child. “The adult James picks up the baby and shakes her, Baker wrote. “They smoke cigarettes and drugs with the baby in the same room”. The Department of Children and Families also received an identical complaint on August 12 of this year it is not clear if it also came from Baker.

Baby Shannon’s mother as well as the sitter now face charges in her disappearance; included in those charges is filing a false report regarding a missing child.

Although Shannon has been safely recovered there are still a lot of questions to be answered.

NOW BABY SHANNON HAS A BIG CAREING FAMILY STREACHING ALL OVER THE WORLD!!!

Andrea   November 6th, 2009 12:54 pm ET

This story is crazy to me. I feel in my heart as if the parents of baby Shannon have some skeletons in the closet. I am just like you Nancy, even when my girls sleep in I am still up every morning at six a.m. And when my brother even sticks his key in the door I wake up to it. How did these parents not know, hear, feel, or see anything when their daughter went missing? Either the reports of drug abuse are true or just the simple fact that they are no good parents. I feel deeply that there is more to this story and I believe just like Nancy, no charges, yeah right. Both the parents should face charges. This baby is precious and anyone can see she is needing help. I honestly don't think the mother, father, nor the grandmother should have anything more to do with this baby. Even the grandmother is guilty for not alerting DCS with the "fact" that her daughter is mentally unstable and raising an infant. She may act like she's concerned on your show, but she is just playing the fiddle with the parents, using all she can use to gain custody of the child. Just watch and see if she hasn't gotten baby Shannon in her custody. This is sad, this child was forgotten, stolen, and now being used.

MICHELLE   November 6th, 2009 1:12 pm ET

MY HEART GOT WEAK WHEN I HEARD THIS STORY! I ASK THE LORD TO PLEASE SEND AN ANGEL TO WATCH OVER HER! HER MOMS NEED HELP I HOPE SHE WILL GET IT

Machell Earl   November 6th, 2009 1:19 pm ET

Well thank God she was found alive and well. We all know that won't be the case with poor Haleigh Cummings...anyways.... Why is Mrs. Bakers picture here with the baby? Why not post the picture of the other idiot...Shannon's mother? They should be ashamed of themselves because so many horrible things are happening to the nations children. And shouldn't the mother have known that Susan Baker was a key suspect or person of interest in the disapperance of her step son Paul? I wonder if the police will "squeeze" Susan more about the disapperance of Paul???? Another version of Misty Croslin just in an older version.. Last one to see them and don't know anything. I bet she could be a great mentor for Misty Croslin...don't you think?

char   November 6th, 2009 1:36 pm ET

omigod, ive said it before( supsect shaken baby) and now reading that above( james, the dad-although rumored to be not biological, but sure is claiming it to get the benefits, foodstamps, ect) ....i dont know if i want to cry, puke, or just go down there and beat him into a pulp myself... i think all 3 emotions/reactions..but right now leaning towards the latter.(beating him into a pulp).. and mom isnt much better, allowing this to happen, the shaking,drugs,ect.... and that babysitter, leaving her in a box, putting powder around her to cover the stentch of a poopy diaper....wtf?
i pray i dont read ANY kind of headline or newslink that this baby was returned to her parents... ive had 2 kids myself, and yes there have been times where i got frustrated w/ them, but at least i had the snap to put MYSELF in timeout( made sure kids were secured/not getting into anything=then took myself into a bedroom for a cooling off period...) never, ever hurt/ or shook them. once i got calmer/could deal w/ it better, i returned back to them. so many people desperately want babies but cant have them, and then you have these folks...
best wishes for shannon, god bless and godspeed to recovery and rebuilding her life...im hoping she is young enough not to recall this horrific former life/parents she had.

kim green   November 6th, 2009 1:49 pm ET

I sincerely hope this mother does not get this precious little girl back!! Does anyone wonder why this baby is 7 months old and only weighs 11 pounds? Some people arent fit to own an animal much less a child!

Sitara   November 6th, 2009 2:10 pm ET

That poor baby is so serious looking like she doesn't know how to react to attention and people being nice to her. Grandma almost got her to smile one and I hope that Grandma gets her.

barb   November 6th, 2009 2:26 pm ET

I laugh when I think about this babysitter being such an idiot that she would think the authorities would never look under her bed for this baby. I praise the Lord for everyone that serched for this baby.

I agree with others. This poor little baby looks so sad.

Sarah   November 6th, 2009 2:33 pm ET

Thank God she was found alive! I hope she gets in the hands of a loving family & out of the cruel & evil hands of her unfit parents & babysitter! God bless her little soul!

Bula D   November 6th, 2009 3:08 pm ET

Yesterday I watched Baby Shanon's grand mother showering kisses and touching the little girls face and she said she came a long way to pick up the baby. I was surprised that the baby did not have any recognition of this person (grand mother) in her eyes, she never smiled, never streched her arms to go to her, she looked at peace with the officer who was holding her. It makes me wonder that so much of love the woman was showring at the baby, was it for real? The baby's mom is already in the jail and this lady is that girl's mother. If she gets the custody of baby Shanon I hope the baby is not falling into another bad hand.
I love your show Nancy, I get a chance to watch a little bit of TV only in the evening and I do not even try to find out what else is going on, it is only your channel I get glued to. All my good wishes are for you, your lovely children and your family.

Suzie   November 6th, 2009 3:09 pm ET

stupid idiotic people who would do such a thing to a baby.

Mandy   November 6th, 2009 3:09 pm ET

What is wrong with some of the people in our world?? I shouldn't even call them people, they are demons. It breaks my heart and tears my soul to hear of stories like this one. I truly believe that our entire Child Protective Services program needs to be restructured. This child was lucky, but think of all the others who have endured so much pain and have eventually died...their only way of having peace because citizen like myself did speak up enough, write my congressmen enough, and ultimately protect the children of our country enough. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!! We all need to stand up and do something for our children! Write your congressmen, senators, and any other entity you can think of TODAY so that we can band together and start to make a difference in our child welfare system.

DANIELLE   November 6th, 2009 3:34 pm ET

My god... 11 pounds at 7 months? I have a 3 month old and she weighs 12.5. THANK GOD SHE WAS FOUND ALIVE! Now just do not give this little girl back to the mother. Let this child have a chance at life!

melissa   November 6th, 2009 3:39 pm ET

all the people in the world who want children why not give the beautiful baby girl to someone who wants her.I have twin girls and I would take her in a heart beat...

nicole russell   November 6th, 2009 3:47 pm ET

look at that beautiful little girl..who would or could treat her like that...she is absolutely adorable and i thank god that she has a good family now.. she deserves it...and i really don't think her grandmother should get her...mabey she deserves visitation or something but she was on t.v. the other day saying "i am behind my daughter %100" my mother woud disown me... and i woudn't blame her..

momella   November 6th, 2009 3:55 pm ET

Has anyone looked at the babysitter's records?1! Horrific!!! 80 days for a 10 year sentenced for almost beating her stepdaughter to death! Her hands were broken!!! And the dissapearance of her 3 yr old stepson back in '87???!!! What is going on here!!! I can ONLY imagine what she planned to do with this poor innocent BABY. I swear people need to get strict licences to PROCREATE.

poor poor innocent, helpless babies. who just arrived on this earth only to be tortured. unbelievable.

Jeanne   November 6th, 2009 4:58 pm ET

I agree about the poor baby having no emotion. Her eyes are not happy eyes, she looks like she has never been nurtured or played with or loved. I hope that since she is only 7 months there is hope for her to get the attention and love she needs. I am not sure if the grandmother is the right person, unless she was closely monitored. I just felt so sad for this baby and pray she will smile and feel love

Elaine   November 6th, 2009 5:39 pm ET

Althoughit is truly joyful that this child was found alive, America should be outraged by this case. This innocent child should be the poster child for all the children we "throw in the river" everyday. We need to stop sending the message that it okay to have children that the system will just take of financially.etc. to parents (whether teenagers and/or incompentent adults) that do not have the skills. Our problem is generational. If the system does its job correctly this time it would make sure Shannon never sees this whole lot again.....

Pam   November 6th, 2009 5:56 pm ET

What is the story about the babysitter haveing a step-child that has been missing for a couple years now?

Kimberly   November 6th, 2009 6:10 pm ET

this is why some people should NOT be allowed to breed! Thank God baby Shannon was found alive. She deserves so much better and I pray she will be placed with a family who truly deserves her...that little baby is way too good for her "parents" (term used loosely) or that sorry sitter!

Patty Cooper   November 6th, 2009 6:13 pm ET

Like most people who saw beautiful baby Shannon on your show, I cannot get her scared, 'who can I trust' look out of my mind; I've never seen a child with an expression like that–only animals that have been abused!! God bless all those who never gave up looking for her–who saved her; the next job–and maybe the biggest–never, never, never let her return to her family!!

Adele   November 6th, 2009 7:12 pm ET

I know that it is NEVER okay to kidnapp a child but what if the babysitter was telling the truth about how horrible the parents are to the baby and the sitter took justice into her own hands because calling child services didnt seem to help. She probably put the baby in the box when she saw the police show up to the house, I doubt she kept the baby in their the whole time. I'm really not trying to justify these actions, its just that it would be hard to watch a baby in an abusive situation and the state do nothing. Obviously I dont know much about this story, its just a thought off the top of my head why someone would go to such desperate measures.

Adele   November 6th, 2009 7:15 pm ET

I take my above comment back if the comment I just read on here about the babysitters abusive past is correct.

rita custer   November 6th, 2009 7:43 pm ET

Baby Shannon looks mal-nutrician. Something is wrong. the baby does not move around, or does the baby ever laugh or smile. Her eyes look sad. Maybe she ia a Failure to Thrive baby

Bev Pierpoint   November 6th, 2009 8:34 pm ET

Is baby Shannon Autistic? She doesn't talk or cry just stares.

The condition is characterized by impaired social interaction and communication and it seems to fit baby Shannon, who is a sweet little girl.

rachael   November 6th, 2009 9:12 pm ET

I just heard about this story from a coworker I can't understand people who have children and who ever want to hurt them. I am a mother of 2 young boys 5 y& 4months and I would go crazy if anything would happen to my little love bugs. I hope she (Shannon) will be okay and she finds someone to love this young child and may she live a great life!!!!!! We need to love our children and not hurt them. Life is to short and we should live everyday to the fullest and not with hate!!!

JoAnn   November 6th, 2009 9:39 pm ET

What is wrong with this world all we hear about is babies going missing on a daily basis from Florida? This is one sick state/world. I pray Casey gets life or better yet,the electric chair while all the world watches. Count me in. All those moms are pieces of shit, so sorry but I just couldn't resist.

Thank you again Nancy for all you do. Go get em Nancy!!!!

vicky   November 6th, 2009 9:47 pm ET

she is not a failure to thrive baby. she is an angel from GOD. she needs medical care and lots of love. i know this because she looks and acts like my daughter did when she came into this world. she is one of GODS special children he will protect her from knowing any kind of cruelty or abuse.

michele   November 6th, 2009 9:59 pm ET

This poor baby! Obviously she is just another ignored victim of Florida's child welfare system. I called child welfare on my old neighbors in Florida because their 2 and 3 year old babies were wandering the neighborhood NAKED for hours and the older children are never supervised either. Their 4 year old is in and out of people's homes constantly, lucky for her that everyone was kind to her. Nothing ever came of it, no sheriff came, no child welfare, nothing. These parents one year later still do not watch their children. Wake up Florida.

NancyLee   November 6th, 2009 10:11 pm ET

"Has anyone noticed, Florida needs to protect their children better"!

sally   November 6th, 2009 10:26 pm ET

I can't stand to think about what lies ahead for Shannon. Hopefully, it will not be an ending like Kelsey Smith Briggs. Sad.

joe   November 6th, 2009 11:56 pm ET

I am so happy that they found the baby and these people are locked up for now. As far as her weighing only 11 pounds being 7 months old, that is very disturbing. The baby looks like she has something wrong with her, possibly fetal alohol syndrome? Her eyes are very close together and her ears are very low on the head. Wondering if maybe the mom was either an alcoholic or possibly into drugs.

FRHVIOLET   November 7th, 2009 4:10 am ET

I think this is a very sad story and that the parents of baby Shannon should be punished for doing drugs in front of there beautiful daughter .. I think that the babysitter did some about it but leaving the baby in a cedar box 2 by 3 box was wrong she should of brought the baby to the police not in a box underneath the bed but she only knows what that little angel went though.. The mother and Father never talk to the cops i wonder why they had alot to hide. I am a mother of a 12 yr old and he is my life and if anything happen to him I would die and if my son was missing I would do what I can to find my son not do anything like these parents did and don't know who the babysitter took the baby without yhe parents hearing anything I think the parents did not care and probably on drugs and the babysitter did what she thought was right at the time. what is going on with florida babies missing everywhere what is happening to this world..Just thank god the baby is safe ,,

Teresa   November 7th, 2009 6:28 am ET

The story is heart breaking and pepole like that dont deserve to have kids in my eyes with God willing maybe she will be forgiven but yet im thankfull that bby shannon was found alive and safe

Julie in Mn   November 7th, 2009 4:31 pm ET

Even if this ladies story is true and she was "rescuing" (as she says ) baby Shannon why put her in a box? Did she really think that a box was a better place for her to be? I can just imagine that poor baby's fear as she is in that box with no light or anyone to hold her and comfort her. I hope that these women feel that same pain and fear when they are locked behind bars for years and years. The mother's story sounds funny to me too I don't think she deserves this child even if she didn't help with the kidnapping. That baby deserves a wonderful family that will love her and not use her to get attention!!!

bonnie   November 7th, 2009 5:02 pm ET

i agree with you Bula D and also I agree with NancyLee that Florida is getting lots of attention when it comes to missing children and abused children. beautiful chocolate eyes. CPS and sheriff/police officers please make sure the grandmother or whomever it is with the purple long nails, make sure the baby will recieve gr8 care. i think the baby may have needed to stay with foster parents first for a while. does the grandmother smoke, you know second hand smoke is child abuse! i ain't down on someone smoking, but smoking in the home or in the car, or anywhere near someone is not a good idea. coming from an ex smoker, yeah i'm ashamed of it now.

mery   November 7th, 2009 6:32 pm ET

OMG i have 7month old baby girl too i couldnt imagn doing that to her even when i go to work i couldnt even set for 1hr with out hearing her voice i dont know what these people are t hinking i dont even have the word to experase them they are a sinner (seytan) they could done a lot not to get peragenant like use protaction even if they do and they dont want the baby t afterwords thanks to amirica there is a lots of choise or give it to some body there is a lots of people who wants a child who wants to adopt ooohhhhh peopl peopl peopl think thinkkkkkkk

Anabella Giusti   November 7th, 2009 9:29 pm ET

Hello Nancy...let me say to you that Italy loves you, I'm a big fan!...Thank God this baby is alive! I just don't know how some people doesn't realize that a baby is a blessing, not a toy, it's a manifestation of love...there are many ones who can't have babies or have trouble to get pregnat and they would do anything for having a little life. I hope this makes concience.

Beth   November 7th, 2009 9:40 pm ET

I cant believe this does not anyone have a heart any more. I dont know how someone conchesly does this. That whole family should be charged knowing anything about this. If you thought for one minute that your daughter 1. Being unstable, 2. Being unfit 3. Doing drugs that you a grandmother being 14 hours away should of aloud that her daughter would be able to live that far away from her daughter. if you new that your daughter was that way then why arent you close to your daughter . So what if you drove 14 hours where have you been for your daughter sounds like she needed a mama to, I will pray for you guys but i hope that some loveing family may reap the joy of this pretty baby. This brings me to my knees please Im not trying to be mean.

Melissa   November 7th, 2009 9:44 pm ET

This little girl has obvious physical and developmental delays and appears to have some hydrocephalus or macrocephaly issues going on as well. She needs to get immediate medical attention and physical/occupational therapy. She will not behave and respond as a typical child because of the abnormalities in her brain, aquired or congenital.

L   November 7th, 2009 11:22 pm ET

this was all planned out i tell you, i'll bet on my life it was...they just wanted attention, sympathy and MONEY! poor baby shannon, i hope she's in better care now. My prayers are with her.

tabitha bateman   November 8th, 2009 2:01 am ET

god bless the mom and sitter who did this.thankly the baby girl is safe.

Marsha   November 8th, 2009 2:03 am ET

IMO any person who puts a child in a locked wooden box and stashes her under the bed and hides the box under clothes has no regard for human life and should be charged and prosecuted for attempted murder. The mother, Aunt and anyone else involved are equally guilty and should be held accountable. This is more than a case of ignorance and child abuse, if the child had sofficated we would be looking at murder...well.....thank God the outcome was different however, the actions of the adults are still the same. Charge them and punish them accordingly!!

melissa marshall   November 8th, 2009 2:53 am ET

I was just wandering why the babysitter took her to begin with? And is the baby ok? Her weight seemed small to me as I am a mom of 6 children. But it was great to hear she was found

steph   November 8th, 2009 2:54 am ET

thank God!!! that she was found alive. I just can't get her sad little face out of my head,I can tell that she has not been treated well. please tell me that they are not going to give her back to her mother or grandmother for that matter. I mean every parent wants to stick by their kids but when they know that they have mental problems and have heard something like this happen, then they need to think about what they are doing, think about that poor little baby!! the grandmother was far away and doesn't know what has really happened to baby Shannon, she needs to look in her eyes, they tell a thousand stories.thank God for people like Nancy Grace who speak out for the victims. God bless you Nancy!!

Briady   November 8th, 2009 6:56 am ET

I definately do not think the parents or grandparents should be allowed anywhere near this child. The authorities would be absolutely mental to think it's okay to hand this child back over to the mother especially since the babysitter had a child go missing in the SAME circumstances 22 years ago, this child was never seen again, and the other child was put in care after it was found out that she was beaten, with broken ribs and bruises all over. Please. It's ridiculous.

kim   November 8th, 2009 12:54 pm ET

I am so glad they found this little angel alive. I hope they don't give this child back to her mother(and i use that title loosely) . I agree that this type of thing or worse happen alot in Florida.

Kayla   November 8th, 2009 12:58 pm ET

I dont think the babysitters statement is quite true because if she was looking out for the welfare of the child she would NOT have put her in a LOCKED BOX under HER bed!

wanda h   November 8th, 2009 2:59 pm ET

This is another one of those terrible stories you cant stop thinking about! HOW WOULD THAT BABY SITTER LIKE TO BE PUT IN A SMALL BOX?she needs put away! mom needs to be put away! and the grangmother does not need to get this little angel she knew that baby was not being taken care of she knew her daughter better than anyone! all this is in gods hands now and they will be punished! i watched as the grandmother was giving kisses to the baby and i truley believe it was all for show ! GRANDMOTHER SHOULD NOT GET THAT GOD SENT BABY GIRL!!!!

tweety   November 8th, 2009 7:37 pm ET

MY HEART GOES OUT TO BABY SHANNON I HOPE THE MOTHER DOES NOT GET HER RIGHTS BACK & LET A LOVING FAMILY TAKE THIS BABY FOR THE BABYSITTER NOTHING BUT WHITE TRASH
WHY WOULD U LET SOMEONE WATCH YOUR BABY IF SHE ALREADY HAS A LITTLE BOY THE HAVE NEVER FOUND
YOW THE MOTHER NEEDS HELP AND SHE NEEDS TO BE STERILZE SO THIS WONT HAPPEN TO ANOTHER CHILD OF HERS THAT MAY NOT BE SO LUCKY NET TIME THE ONLY HELP SHE

Annette Evans   November 8th, 2009 7:44 pm ET

At a time in this country when there are so many bad things going on, it's so good to know that there are still good things happening as well. One of those good things is the survival of little baby Shannon. That sweet little baby was destined to live. More than 2000 years ago, another baby was born, destined to give hope to the world. So it is with little Shannon. She has become one of my little "heart rings". What a wonderful gift for all of us. I hope she has the best Christmas anyone could ever give her.

Cathy   November 8th, 2009 9:33 pm ET

I'm so happy Baby Shannon was found alive and well. But poor baby... Her sweet little eyes are blank. She seems so young yet seems to feel nothing.. No emotion.. does anyone else find that odd??

Michelle Allen   November 8th, 2009 9:44 pm ET

This story has me really confused. If the mother gave the baby to the sitter, why did she report lil' Shannon missing?

Gail Raines   November 8th, 2009 9:44 pm ET

I always thought a cedar chest was for memorabilia, not for a beautiful child. That is so wrong. gail Burnside

penny   November 8th, 2009 9:54 pm ET

I work with children and when I look at this little girl she reminds me of so many of the kids that I have seen that have suffered from abuse and neglect. She shows no emotion- no smiles, no crying -nothing. That is an indicator of neglect. She knows from experience that it won't matter if she cries- nobody is going to come help her or give her comfort. Kids that have experienced this often grow up with an attachment disorder and have difficulty bonding with caregivers. Hopefully she is placed with people who are experienced foster parents and can give her the emotional support she needs.

kelly   November 8th, 2009 10:29 pm ET

I am so thankful that precious little Shannon was found alive. She looks so sad to me. When my son was 7 months old, he weighed 25 pounds and all he did was smile. Please don't give her back to her parents. I would love to have the chance to raise a beautiful little girl like Shannon. I just pray that she goes to someone who will give her more love than she can handle. God bless you Shannon. You are a Heaven sent blessing and it's a shame that your parents are too stupid to realize it. Good luck my sweet angel.

clayre   November 8th, 2009 10:29 pm ET

Looks like poor little Shannon is malnourished, and hydrocephalic. Not sure that the grandmother can do much better...

L. Kinsey   November 8th, 2009 10:44 pm ET

Nancy, Do you think the babysitter in her own sick mind was trying to find a way to steal the baby from these parents? Is there any evidence that she was just hiding the baby temporarily until the search would die down, and then she would make plans to leave town and take the baby with her, to raise her somewhere else on her own? I know she put her in a box, but maybe this was just all she could think to do to hide the baby so that no-one would suspect her. Thanks and I love your show!

Lola   November 8th, 2009 11:24 pm ET

Nancy, i admire your opinon, you and I think alot alike. Tonight I was surprised that there was no mention about the letter to the govener, being accusations...and only that. The letter could of came from a mad or jealous person. About the smoking....and of course there's always the "drug abuse" . I just think that unless it was already proven fact, right now it should only be an accusation....thanks Lola

proudmommyof3   November 8th, 2009 11:36 pm ET

I am so glad they found this baby alive, but why were they hiding her in a box.I dont understand. I just wonder if they planned on killing her?

Sher   November 8th, 2009 11:42 pm ET

I also agree with the caller. This baby does not respond to affection in any way and that is just not normal. Sher

Carol   November 8th, 2009 11:47 pm ET

The first time I saw a picture of this baby, I knew it was not "normal". As the Dr.said, her head is too large for her obviously malnourished little body, her eyes have a hollow, expressionless look. How in the name of sanity could a mother be so irresponsible? Nancy Grace, God bless you. I could hear the quivering in your voice as you spoke aboutr this child. If every child could have a mother like you, you would not have to report these horrific stories. I pray this child will not go back to this family.

stella   November 8th, 2009 11:52 pm ET

some caller mentioned that baby shannons eyes do not appear happy.

well I haven't heard her cry or show fear at strangers (police).that tells me
that very little care or holding /play was done with her she has very little life energy or laughter -my kids would have screamed bloody murder at strangers at any age.
all of them belong in jail-I hope the mother doesn't get her back and where's her other "missing boy"

Gayle   November 8th, 2009 11:54 pm ET

Nancy,
Please stay on this story about Baby Shannon. I pray that a loving,
Christian family might be allowed to adopt little Shannon and give
her the kind of life every child deserves. Please be her guardian angel
for all of us,Nancy. May God bless you.

Diana   November 9th, 2009 12:13 am ET

Hi Nancy, I watch your show all the time and now find myself watching people and kids a lot more carefully. I hope I have never let some poor child down by not sensing or seeing something suspicious. It breaks my heart to think of the horrible life this poor little baby has known. I think this babysitter and her husband had set this up to make it look like the mother and father had done something to the baby so no one would look at them. Any one who could put a baby in a box like that has absolutley no heart, she is a cruel sadisitic excuse for a human being, and who knows what their plans were for that baby. The mother on the other hand although not much better at least had some thought to try to save the baby,by reporting it, unless she was only saving her self. Cant the state take this baby away from all of the relatives and have some normal loving person take her. Please dont quit following this story, so we can all watch over little Shannon and make sure she is ok. Will you be covering the sentencing so we can all cheer when these bad people are put away and hopefully their full sentences.

Celine   November 9th, 2009 2:16 am ET

Baby Shannon is beautiful, but doesn't look normal to me. She has the same "flat" affect on her little face that is the same in all the photos I've seen of her. Has she ever smiled or cried? Thank God she has been found apparently unharmed...a good ending to what could have been another tragic loss of an innocent child...

Crystal   November 9th, 2009 2:17 am ET

I am so glad to hear baby shannon is alive and doing well!! I hope that give the mother and babysitter, the maximum punishment. I think if more child abuser where punished fully maybe innocent little children who be safe. Go get em Nancy.

Chris   November 9th, 2009 2:18 am ET

What kind of cold hearted bitch do you have to be to put a 7 month old infant in a box and then put that box under your bed! It takes someone sadistic to even think about doing something like that!

Amanda   November 9th, 2009 2:44 am ET

How can a mother do this to a child! I can never imagine doing that to my child! this story makes me sick and puts me in tears! that child probably would have died of suffication! Look at all those clothes stuffed in that box! what is that lady thinking! She better be put in jail! the women's mother is not any better! she should be horrified by what her daughter has done but yet she is taking sides with her child abusing daughter! People are sick! The grandmother doesnt need custody of the beautiful little girl! I pray for that baby!!!!

It's sacry to think that ANYONE can have a baby. It makes me sick to see and hear about the horrible things that people do to babies and childern, and in most cases their OWN children. They should rot in hell. It angers me so much that it makes me think of the ugliest things that could possibly happen to these criminals and feel that they deserve it. Hopefully this beautiful baby girl will never remember this part of her life.

GOD works in mysterious ways, I hope and Pray that this child recovers and whoever is responsible pays dearly. How can you take a beautiful newborn and put her in a box under the bed and leave her there? People like this deserve to have their tubes removed, NEVER to have children again. Look at the response from the thousands of loving and caring people that truly care about life. They need to go to prison for the rest of their lives, and I am sure that they will pay in there. When all is said and done the rest will be up to GOD, It breaks my heart to hear of a story like this, and it also restores my faith in mankind, she was found and is now in safe hands I hope they do not release her to a family member that will give this mother, "and I use that term loosly" a chance to reconnect with this baby, give her to a loving home where she will recieve the love and life she deserves, Nancy Grace is also a God sent, she stays on top of these stories no matter the outcome.

I watch Nancy Grace with my mother religiously.....I am a mother of 3 and am so disgusted by all of this.......how in the world can anyone stick a poor defenceless 7 moth old beautiful baby girl in a chest and stick it under the bed with no food and left for the dead? I truelly dont get people like this....I think this really goes to show that we as parents really need to look closer into who we allow to watch our children. The babysitter and mother both deserve to rot in a cedar box buried way under a jail cell. As for the grandmohter staying by the side of her daughter....why?!!? If she says she left the baby with the babysitter why would she fail to tell police that when she reported her missing? she wanted nothing to do with that precious baby.....also why in the world was this women allowed to get time served for a 10 year sentence when only doing 80 days? that makes no sense what so ever! My other concern is with Dcf everyone of these cases where babies have come up missing or found dead dcf was involved at some point......where are they failing? They are failing the children that really need there help but instead it seems as if they go for cases where they can make a penny off of it! this disgusts me!

Mary   November 9th, 2009 6:27 pm ET

It concerns me this baby did not cry or even figit when the officer, a stranger, was holding her. She was so still. I think more damage has been done to this sweet innocent child than is being shared. She's just not responsive as a baby should be. If there ever could be any good come out of a situation like this, it would be that she has a new family, someone to love and take care of her the way she should be cared for.

Lynda Solorzano   November 9th, 2009 7:08 pm ET

My daughter Nina Baker went on Geraldo sunday nite to plead for information about baby Shannons case and her brother Paul Bakers case from 23yrs ago. She held it together for the minutes she was on live and then afterwards she was so overcome with grief and sadness that she broke down and cried in her grandmothers arms. I lost my son 23 yrs ago... and it broke something in every member of the family. I act tough to support my daughter, but you can believe my wounds, though hidden are still full of pain and grief. I can not say enough how happy i am for this family. To have thier precious daughter alive and well. Susan Baker is a monster and should be treated as such, how many more children must suffer at her hands before someone says enough? Lynda Solorzano Durham NC

How wonderful the baby is alive!!! Most of these stories don't have a good ending. I hope we can all get to the bottom of this story because none of this is making any sense. And I am not buying this mother's story for a minute, she may have been mentally unstable but she should of seeked help. Thank god baby Shannon was found and taken away from that horrible babysitter. it seems baby Shannon has suffered so much in her short life so far, you can tell by her sad eyes. She has absolutely no emotion.

julie   November 9th, 2009 8:45 pm ET

i find it odd that babys grandma lived so far away from her strange daughter i would want to keep a eye on her and baby . wheres the babys dad any body know ?

Dianne   November 9th, 2009 8:47 pm ET

Why is this baby so completley devoid of emotion? I'm so sad about this.

Melissa   November 9th, 2009 9:18 pm ET

Given the presentation of this baby- I would venture a guess that she has spent a LOT of time in that box. She doesn't appear to be responsive at all in affect in those clips of her grandmother kissing her. The box treatment could certainly explain why she appears so small for her age and has a vacant expression most of the time. I really hope Shannon is able to thrive now that her abusers have been caught and that she can make up for the time lost in her development. Being restrained or confined is one of the most traumatizing types of abuse & her brain development has been seriously delayed by the lack of social and physical interaction. I hope the perpetrators of this abuse aren't able to get off or allowed to minimize what they've done because she's still alive. Hopefully these people will admit to the full extent of abuse & if I were a prosecutor I would definitely be asking them how often the box was used & not just assume it was for the 12 hour period- this is a very plausible explanation for why her growth was stunted.

What is wrong with the women of Florida? I can not believe how many crimes agaist children there has been!

Laura   November 10th, 2009 9:26 pm ET

People like this are possesed. Don't mean to sound like a religious freek but I do believe Satan is alive on earth and takes over some peoples mind. She needs to be executed and gotten rid of becuase she is not going to get what America wants all the time, help for this dear woman.

Eileen D   November 10th, 2009 9:37 pm ET

This is very similar to a case in England last year, where the mother conspired with a relative to fake a kidnapping- they were going to claim and share the substantial reward when the girl was 'found'. Thankfully the mother is in jail and the child is now in Care.

ty and dad and nay   November 10th, 2009 10:54 pm ET

I think this was truly sad and sick this is a innocent kid barely even started living it's life. It's crazy what's happening in this world we live in all of this killing and abduction it's not right. Peolpe who hurt other people let alone children have no real emotions and no feelings.

Lois   November 11th, 2009 12:09 am ET

I was wondering how many dogs Mr. Klass has trained. He seems always to have information about dogs. First, he says that the dogs would not have a scent because the baby did not walk or crawl and then the dogs find the baby. Tonight he makes another comment about dogs not getting any scent .... obviously, this man has no experience in bloodhounds or tracking dogs ... we have search and rescue dogs and they have found victims alive while tracking trails 72 hours old and over 9 miles. I think they should be careful with what they say about search and rescue missions and dogs!!!

I want to say, Kandis Boyer is a lier and is putting on the biggest front there ever was. That whole family is into drugs and has serious mental problems, and I know this from experiance of them. They lie and ruin peoples lives! When they was living in Michigan before moving to Texas they was running a meth lab at their home, and this was out of the mouth of one of Kandis' daughters. Kandis and one of her other daugter needs to be investagated for the lies they tell on people and ruin lives just to get out of a marriage that Kandis entered and then decided 8days later that she didnt want to be there anymore! I just wish to God that my stepson could get his own daughter away from this screwed up family!! Yes Kandis Boyer has known for years that Christina has mental issues and the only thing that she had done through the years was get Social Security for her and not the medical help she needed. Yes this family has ALOT of skeltons in their closets and if Nancy Grace stays on top of them, they will all come out! this family knows how to use the justice system to work on their behalf, and somehow, someone needs to stop these people. To many lives has been ruined because of them, including the father of Kandis' daugters. Kandis has never had control over her kids. they used to sneak out of the windows at night. The sneaking out of windows became such a problem the man Kandis was married to at the time nailed the windows shut as Kandis refuse to do anything about it. Kandis knew Christina had mental problems all her life, she should have done something to prevent her from having children instead of waiting until something like this happens to play the caring grandmother and mother. Christina is not all to blame here! Most of it relies on Kandis Boyer for not being the mother she should have been to her own kids. Knowing this family the way I do, NONE of them should be a part of this babys life!

Kaela Shaw   November 11th, 2009 1:56 pm ET

This is sickening...... Oh My God!! Who would do this kinda crap to a child......They better not give this child back to her parents....

Tiffany   November 11th, 2009 3:32 pm ET

I'm just Happy that Baby shannon is safe. Her mother should be ashamed of herself!!!! My thing is if her mother knew that her daughter wasn't right in the head, why didn't she try to go through the proccess of getting her grandchild while her daughter was still pregnant? or soon as she was born one or the other. I am a proud parent my son is 2 years old. Soon as my son came into this world I became a light sleeper any type of noise or movement would wake me up. I just pray like everyone else that shannon is placed in good care!!

Bonnie   November 11th, 2009 4:56 pm ET

Have they determined what is wrong with Baby Shannon. A doctor was on Nancy's show earlier this week and agreed because the babies head was so big and her eyes don't look normal that she probably has some health problems. I noticed from the photo's of her that she never smiled in any of them, even when her grandma was kissing her hands and face not a smile. God I hope that baby doesn't have something that isn't temporary wrong with her. She has had a bad life so far and deserves a family to love and nurture her.

Gayle   November 11th, 2009 10:51 pm ET

I want to keep up with the progress of darling Baby Shannon.
Please put me on your e-mail list, Nancy.

I must say that living in Florida, I am completely and utterly disgusted with the humans that are killing, kidnapping, and lying about their children. It seems that this state has more kidnappings than any other state these days. Anyway, about baby shannon, I just hope that the state does not ever allow the mother or grandmother to see this child again. I have a wonderful friend who some claims were made against by this christina and kandis, and i must say he was innocent thank god. The one thing she does deserve is to sit her tail in prison and have to think about what she did to this little girl. Sick is the only word that I can use to describe her. Nancy Grace, thank you for the investigative work that you do when it comes to these crimes of hate. I am so glad that we have you out here doing your job. Sometimes I think you are the one that solves the crimes before the detectives do. Thank you for the work that you have done involving Caylee Anthony. What a beautiful child, and an innocent life lost and taken away so young.

Connie Barrier   November 18th, 2009 10:21 pm ET

I am a later in life Mother who was told she could not have children and at 42 years old I got pregnant with a PRECIOUS little girl. She is 5 years old and I still wake up 5 or 6 times during the night to check on my daughter and when I hear all these stories of these children being abused and beaten and killed by the very people that are supposed to protect them and love them It breaks my heart and makes me cry and I HAVE TO go check on my baby just to kiss on her and smell her and kiss on her.It repulses me that these children are abused and miss treated by the very same people that these children trust and look up to protect and love them.To h*** with a fair trial the victums were not given that .The Caylee Anthony Case REALLY affected me–My Daughter has the same smile that she did. When my daughter says her prayers she will put her and Haileigh Cummings in her blessings.May God bless these sweet innocent children-He now holds them in his loving arms. And may he Torture the monsters who Harmed them.I never leave comments or anything like that but I felt like this time I had to.

Connie Barrier   November 18th, 2009 10:29 pm ET

Forgot to add something There are somenights where I have to put my daughter in my bed and will have to get up to use the bathroom and my little girl will sleep right thru and my restroom is right off of the bedroom and my daughter has never woken up even with the light shing in her face. The police needs to stay on Missy Crosslin cause SHE IS NOT TELLING THE TRUTH–DON'T LET HER GET AWAY WITH THE RESPONSIBLITY OF THIS CHILDS DISSAPPEARENCE–IF THEY DO SOMEONE DID NOT DO THEIR JOB!
