Susan Baker's past is still relevant

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office released 72 pages of reports and documents; painting a more detailed picture of Susan Baker’s criminal past and the disappearance of her 3 year old missing stepson, Paul.

Among the many disturbing details is that at one time Baker’s husband allegedly told authorities he believed she killed his son and threw him in a creek. He later recanted this statement but also said that Baker once beat his other 6 year old child so severely that he had to pull her off of her. Baker also underwent a polygraph but the results were found to be inconclusive according to authorities because baker was obese, under stress, and taking medication. However, it was believed by the technician that Baker was being untruthful. Her husband, on the other hand, flat out failed according to police.

Paul’s disappearance has never been solved, but the cloud of suspicion that hung over the Bakers then is still hovering. Investigators from Beaufort County were present in Chipley, Florida when it was determined that Susan Baker allegedly had a hand in Shannon’s disappearance. They are looking for possible connections to their case that happened 22 years ago. So far none have been made or at least released to the public, but how will Baker’s past affect her future?

Chrystina Mercer’s family believes that Baker manipulated her to participate in a plot that included reporting her baby missing about 10 hours after allegedly handing her over to Susan Baker. “I am still behind my daughter 100 percent and I will do whatever it takes to get her the help she needs,” said Kandis Boyer, Shannon’s maternal grandmother. Boyer has also said that her daughter has a history of mental disabilities. Another family member says she stopped growing mentally and physically at the age of 13.

Luckily baby Shannon has been given a second chance. She is safe, in the custody of the Department of Children and Families. It is unclear how long she will remain there, but her grandmother has expressed wanting to take her back to Texas with her.

Thx. Natisha. Unbeleivable. How could anyone beat a tiny child only 6. They don"t fear the Lord or our justice system!

angela melendez   November 10th, 2009 11:10 pm ET

Thankfully, a miracle has given baby Shannon, this sweet, dainty, beautiful little angel a chance to have a loving, happy life. Susan Baker, you deserve to be buried alive, with a box of baking soda!!!

TheOtherD   November 11th, 2009 12:49 am ET

This woman makes Casey Anthony look like a Candystriper as far as I'm concerned. I hope the police are checking her for baby porn IP connections because if she was connected to her stepson's disappearance, she's pretty much capable of anything. Just what did she intend to do longterm with that baby anyway? She surely knows that if caught with her, she'd go to jail and the baby would be in foster care. You can't keep a child in a box indefinitely, unless you decide in your own twisted mind that they're better off dead. It's like these women that cut the babies out of their mothers to have their own children. How in the world can an individual resolve something as pure as the maternal instinct with that kind of mania?!

Jackie   November 11th, 2009 7:22 am ET

What is wrong with these people? It amazes me hoe many people are doing dumb things.

Laura Wallace   November 11th, 2009 11:16 am ET

If grandma supports the childs mother for what she did! She doesn't need this child either! I know we all love our children. But I have a daughter and 2 grandchildren. I would have a very difficult time supporting my daughter that would put her children in danger! If the mother had so many mental issues? Then why had Grandma not stepped in before now? People do evil bad things now and all of a sudden they have mental issues... Thats the problem! No one is punished for what they do! That sweet baby could have died in that box!

Nciholas   November 11th, 2009 1:29 pm ET

I think to mother of the 7-month old baby is not cazy the are such using it as an excuse.

angel   November 11th, 2009 2:05 pm ET

This women needs to be executed along with her husband. If she menal issues why is she having babies. So happy this little baby is alive. Lets hope these unfit parents loose all custody rights. It is obvoious they wanted to kill this baby. No mercy to child abusers. Let them rot in jail.

angel   November 11th, 2009 2:10 pm ET

Baby shannon is in the custody of the Department of Children and Families, lets hope she is put with a loving family and far away from the mental parents that almost killed her. The grandmother is trying to get custody, thats a joke isnt it? If Dept of children and families gives this baby to any family member this baby will end of dead. Lets hope the system works for this little girl. Her parents should be sentenced to death or jail for life.

Leigh   November 11th, 2009 3:38 pm ET

I think in this country you should be sterilized after any convictions of child abuse . That would eliminate all of the repeat offenders and if they wanted children later they could adopt . Alot of them just keep having them anyway for the extra income ......So Sad

char   November 11th, 2009 4:11 pm ET

uh YEAH susan bakers past is TOTALLY revelant in the case too...
thank god baby shannon is out of that mess...

Dani from AZ   November 11th, 2009 8:05 pm ET

I wish every child abuse story goes into the news...there are so many people everyday doing the same things as this woman did to this baby..

sandy   November 11th, 2009 9:32 pm ET

i feel in this country the laws arent tough enough on child killers molestersetc, the police and detectives try and gather all evidence then when it gets to our courts u get these judges and defense attorneys that ruin everything.i dont have much faith in our system anymore. our poor children!!!!!!!!!!!!

chitown lady   November 12th, 2009 10:25 am ET

BOTH PARENTS NEED TO BE JAILED. The father of the 6 yr old child did his son NO favors. He recanted the truth. Whats cops suppose to do. SO So sad that this animal Baker was allowed to be free........They most likely say she is insane like they try to do to all kid killers.

As far as baby Shannon's grandmother....SHAME ON YOU....if you knew your daughter was not dealing with a full deck....why and the heck did you not stand up for this child. You are just as much to blame as your nutty daughter. If you really understood that your daughter was not all there....why oh why in good conscience could you allow her to roam free and get knocked up? Too many parents have a blind eye to their kids when they have head issues. No matter what their age she is your daughter. Watching you BooHoo on tv made me sick. its seems you had a blind eye then why have a seeing eye now. Shame on you.

CSF   November 12th, 2009 4:10 pm ET

umm...if my spouse or bf hit my kid, I would knock their head off! seriously, no excuses!!

PJ Cates   November 12th, 2009 5:18 pm ET

Why is always after family and friends always come out and say that she has mental problems, if all of you know this before, then why are you not worried about them before like when she is pregnant, and the 7 months the little baby girl has been here, it seems to me everyone has let Shannon down, she doesn't seem to have any emotions to anyone, my Grandson will be 6 months the end of this month, and he already knows the people he knows His Mommy and Daddy, and the Grandparents, Shannon is so sad it just breaks my heart, I hope and pray she is put in a home where she can get some love attention, and be able to bond with someone so sad.

PJ   November 12th, 2009 5:30 pm ET

I hope the Grandmother does not get Shannon, when little Shannons story doesn't get any coverage and no paid interviews, ( I don't think Nancy pays for interviews.) She will be on her way back to Texas

SJJ   November 12th, 2009 5:39 pm ET

Chrystina Mercer’s family DID try to help her. They did try to gain custody of the baby after her birth and they were DENIED by family services. Family services ruled that the parents were competent to raise the baby, despite the family's concerns, and there was nothing they could do. Their hands were tied by family services. All of you who sit here in judgment of this family should be ashamed of yourselves, you know less than half the story yet you have already decided to condemn the entire family based on Chrystina's actions when it is family services you should be condemning for not taking the family's concerns seriously after Shannon's birth!

Lance   November 12th, 2009 5:52 pm ET

Susan Baker has no right to live in society. She (and her husband) is a clear danger to any child she's around! I pray that she is locked up for the rest of her life. Otherwise, someone else is going to suffer the same way little Shannon did. KEEP HER LOCKED UP!

Please, don't allow little Shannon to live with her Grandmother! She loves and adores her sick daughter, and the daughter will find a way to get to Shannon. Let a loving, two parent, family adopt her.

Melinda   November 12th, 2009 6:09 pm ET

PLEASE don't give little Shannon to the Grandmother! That would be shameful. This precious child should be adopted by a loving family that will make sure that she stays away from the EVIL likes of Susan Baker!

Susan Baker is a CHILD KILLER, please, please keep her behind bars!

Melinda   November 12th, 2009 6:21 pm ET

SJJ: I think we all know what a lousey job Family Services does. Just check their records. Most are burnt out, and just want to get the 'ol paycheck. America has GOT to find a way to protect it's little ones from the sick, evil, abusive predators that are all around us. Children are not even safe in their own homes anymore! Just look at Polly Klass, and Elizabeth Smart for example.

Marie   November 12th, 2009 9:07 pm ET

It is inconceivable to me (although at this point, it shouldn't be) why James Baker married Susan Baker when he knew she killed his son and he had to pull her off his 6-y/o daughter. That aside, God help us all if we rely simply on Social Services to help this child. They work simply on a set of guidelines, most are burnt out, and more often then not do not do not have the resources or authority to do what they know is right. That added with Social Workers who are simply incompetent at their job (and I do have family members who are Social Workers), it is a lose-lose situation. The entire system needs to be overhauled. Shannon has the opportunity to be placed in an adoptive, loving home and grow up to be a wonderful young lady if she is not bounced around. Let us all hope that is the opportunity she is given.

S.Ray   November 13th, 2009 3:30 pm ET

Unfortuantley, we dont know the entire story .. if the mom does have mental issues and is on drugs there is no telling what Susan Baker told her to convince her to hand over the baby and go along with this. Im not saying the mother was right but i think she was manipulated in some way. Susan Baker is older and wiser. Shes already been there, done that and got away with one childs murder. I think she took advantage of the mom and given the moms mental status and drug use she was an easy target for Susan Baker. Im glad the grandmother is stepping in and supporting her daughter. I have a daughter and 2 yr old granddaughter. Would I be happy if this happened to my granddaughter .. hell no .. but if I knew my daughter was not competent yes I would try to get her the help she needs and would still love her. Thank God this did not turn into another Caylee Anthony story. I dont think the two are even comparable. One is a selfish b*tch, the other is someone who needs help.
And commenting on SJJ .. the sad part about it is is that it is true.. If social services say everything is ok that ties the grandparents hands. If they just go get the baby then they go to jail. They go to jail, the baby goes back to the parents and then there is noone to help the baby.
I believe in the power of prayer and we dont always like how the prayer gets answered but I believe God answered someones prayers about that baby and the situation. Ive always heard that God will even use the devil to do His good works. The baby was found unharmed, healthy, and has been removed from the situation. I hope everyone gets the help they need and that Susan Baker gets what she deserves before she manipulates another victim.

Mary Jones   November 14th, 2009 12:36 am ET

What a sad case. unfortunately you don't need to be sane to have a child.
you don't have to have any sense, or know any parenting skills either.
any crazy with a uterus can have a child. its really sickening to me.

Marge   November 14th, 2009 1:14 am ET

I think it should be automatic death sentence for murderers. It costs the taxpayers a lot of money to keep this evil human beings in jail for life. Some get a few years, then get out and do it again. If it automatic death, maybe they will think before murdering a member of somebodys family.

tabitha bateman   November 14th, 2009 2:39 am ET

thank god the baby has a second chance. god bless her.

kate   November 14th, 2009 6:44 am ET

The world has gone mad. I am so happy that this baby was found alive. However; our Justice system is broken and so is our foster care system. The Grandma is the only way this baby stands a chance.

carolann   November 14th, 2009 12:15 pm ET

well is she on drugs illicit drugs? I DO not recall reading that .It is my belief what t is not quite righ,t is alot of ignorance in this family

Mental illness today is still stigmatized. I cope with a deperssive disorder myself and i resent the comments here. I never killed my children nolr have I any law breaking record.

This country and its peoples who commit these crimes are aware.
YOU COULD NOT LIVE IN THESE TIMES and not know what you are doing.

Send her to jail or prison but for god's sake stop drawing this out
and SOME OF us are sick of this kind of stuff in the news

get her fixed and send her to prison where she belongs

Mommy of twin boys   November 14th, 2009 9:48 pm ET

Ok....tell me please...what is up with all the CRIME IN FLORIDA AGAINST CHILDREN? Is there something in the water???????

Nancy, I am SURE you have noticed this as well.

Jacky Diamond   November 15th, 2009 1:03 pm ET

I hope the baby does not go back to the Grandmother. The Grandmother is supporting her daughter 100% which means a red flag for me. I would rather put the baby in a good family that wants to adopt. If the mother knew that her daughter had mental problems why did she allow her to keep the baby in the first place.

Karma   November 16th, 2009 3:01 pm ET

I am from a town that is close to where this animal lives. It is outrageous that she had a second chance, while Paul has been missing. She knows where he is and she won't tell. In our local paper, there was an article about the abuse that the step-daughter suffered. Unbelievable...what this thing did to two innocent children. I have to be honest tho, I think James Baker is just as guilty...as a parent you are supposed to protect the children that you created, and this man did NOTHING and he stayed married to this thing. It is reported that when he got out of the car and saw the police at his house, he asked the thing, "what did you do, now?" He knows, he knew the abuse was happening and he knew she did something to Paul. I hope to God that this beast never gets to smell the fresh air outside of a prison. I hope you rot, Susan. Your an animal and don't deserve the oxygen you breathe.

laura hill   November 17th, 2009 4:07 pm ET

this baby is adorable i hope her grandmother gets her. i dont understand people at all if she didnt want her why not just give her away instead of claiming she was abducted? ( i dont get it)

dana   November 18th, 2009 3:36 pm ET

Ok, again the justice system has failed our children! I am so sick and tired of them giving light sentences to these monsters. I don't give a rats tush what mental disabilities they have! They need to be caged and kept away from children, and society all together. If it was my child, would I still love her? Hell a mothers love is endless, but I wouldn't want anything to do with her as far as her being around kids again! Shes obviously a case of screwed in the head for life, she will never be rehabilitated! I think she should be taken out with the very abuse she caused and it be done to her! I also can't believe they put her in prison for such a short amount of time. This is the kind of person that needs to be taken out of being alive all together. Her very existance is a death threat to every children she's around. I can't believe they'd let someone like that out of their site. she should sit and rot in prison, and be sent to hell! No child needs treated like this. Paul will never be found most likely, being some piece of #$#$# monster killed him and will never tell anyone where he is. Shes pure evil. Her mother is just a screwed up! They both should be incenerated, or get the chair! These animals are the onest that id like to hear get murdered, they don't belong here are on earth, they aren't human, i hope I never see this woman. being the damn justice system can't do shit to save our kids, someone should be able to! There is no help for susan, paul dad is just as a bit of scum as she is. I could careless if anyone agrees with me, they both should be beaten repeatedly and left for dead, just the way it was done with paul im sure. Sickening how a damn judge can't put these monsters away, they'd rather them terrorize and murder another child.. what does it have to take for them to be kept locked up.. for them to kill over and over again.. of coarse because there you go she does it again, only this time shannon got lucky and her life was spared.

TexasPrideJC   November 22nd, 2009 6:56 am ET

Here in Texas, we raise our children and grand children with pride.
The grandmother is a good and God lovely person. Baby Shannon will receive all the love and care from her. Let us pray for those look, found and are now taking care of Baby Shannon.
