When my 14 year old granddaughter is in my care I look out for her. I dont leave her alone. I dont understand why children keep disappearing, especially when you know there are so many sex offenders around. Parents need to think about what might happen to their child in the hands of a pedifile. I think I would put a GSP on my child if I had to leave them in day care so they could easily be found. Too bad children cant ride bikes or walk home without supervision but that is better than the alternative and the chance of a child being sold as a sex slave.

Pat, as a parent of a 5 year old myself, I'm left wondering how parents these days seem to think "it'll never happen to me". Too many cases come to mind of children kidnapped from their own bedrooms, snatched only houses away from their homes, and in other situations where we think we're save. I check frequently for registered sex offenders in my area, and boy you better believe me if I find out one's in my neighborhood, I'll make sure everyone knows about it. We can't put our children in bubbles, but I'll proubly wear the label of an over protective mom (which really, you can't be these days).

well i am noticing how a rash of these types of crimes keep rising.
very frightening, even more so that cops are limited and people are punished for taking care of the scum.

Anne M   November 11th, 2009 9:50 pm ET

I hope they find her and she is safe. This is an awful world where a beautiful child isn't even allowed to grow up safely.

Elaine   November 11th, 2009 10:02 pm ET

Does anyone know what a five year old is doing up at 5:30 a.m.? I can't believe her mother would leave her unattended for an hour. What was the mother doing during that hour? Has anyone reviewed the security tape to see the activity near their home during that time period? Where was the child's older brother during this time? Have the police questioned the missing child's brother? Who else was living in the trailer with them?

Deborah   November 11th, 2009 10:04 pm ET

We have to enact new laws to protect children, as those we currently have don't seem to be a deterrant. This poor child, and the thousands like her who go missing each year depend on us for their safety, and we're failing! May she be found safe somewhere.

Vonya   November 11th, 2009 10:43 pm ET

When I heard the dogs couldn't pick up Shaniya's scent outside the trailer, I started wondering if they had searched UNDER the trailer. Since mobile homes have "skirting" around them, if she was down there, it would explain the lack of a scent trail outside the home. With her blanket being found covered in fecal matter in the neighbor's trash-can, perhaps she had an "accident" in her bed and someone in the home "punished her" to death then put her under the trailer and tried to get rid of her blanket. The flood of sewage they were talking about could possibly cover any decomposition odor. The thought of that beautiful little girl in that revolting flood of human waste is just revolting. If that is what happened, I can't think of an appropriate penalty for the people involved. (At least not one I can describe in terms that can be posted here.....)

I can't have children and, even though I adore kids, when I think about how the world has changed in my lifetime, I am almost relieved. I have lots of four-legged "kids" and my neighbor's children love to hang out with me and my critters and I am so paranoid about keeping them safe that I won't even let them walk home (which is about 500 yards, max) without me either with them or watching them walk inside their house AND waving to their mom or dad!

The world I grew up in–when we could actually walk to school–is gone.....let's pray it's not too far gone. If we get MAD enough, maybe we can motivate people to fight to get it back, otherwise, this generation's grandchildren will truly know what "hell on earth" is.

my son is 2 and we don't trust him with anyone. i am so glad his dad is educated and worked probation & parole...there are so many sickos men & women out there. only grandmothers babysit and my sister...to have him at 36, we wait on him hand and foot, never dumping him on someone else.

Ruby   November 11th, 2009 11:50 pm ET

I have a daughter and live less than 5 miles from the missing girl...I am distraught and angry as a parent and member of this community. Why I ask did it take the Fayetteville police over 10 hours to find the blanket within 200 yards of the crime scene? Should not the crime scene and it surronding areas been taped off and searched(not in house)? Next there are over 7 sexual offenders registerd within the area, have they been questioned...? I am stunned by the lack of information from the community that area is a known drug area and the trailer in question was under investigation for drugs....SomeONE seen Something!! If it was your child???Would you not want sm1 to talk!!!

cindy   November 12th, 2009 1:46 am ET

I pray that this beautiful precious child will be safe and returned home to her family

Brandy   November 12th, 2009 3:18 am ET

I am sickened once again on another beautiful life disappearing. As a mother of three small children these stories always grasp my heart in full.....myself as Wendy above also keeps and update on sexual offenders its a must now a days in this sick world.....its sad but this is one precaution we all must do to insure the safety of our innocent children. My concern is as it has been with most of these cases is where is our child protective services going wrong? In almost every single case of these missing children DCF OR CPS has been involved at some point.... I think maybe they look a little more carefully into things when reports are made...they are failing our defenseless children....these babies need our help in being there voices and protecting them.....Thank you so much Nancy for airing these stories... it crushes me but I enjoy watching your show and waiting for mine and so many others prayers to come true and these babies brought home safely.

its true as much as we like to put our kids in s safe bubble this is a crazy world and i do like to think it some great loveable nice people out there who give any thing to help achild god please help find this child bring her home safe,

Kelly   November 15th, 2009 6:37 pm ET

I am accused of being a hover mom and cases of children disappearing from home and their bedrooms is why! It is terrible that this beautiful little girl is missing and in danger. I hope if she is harmed that whoever is responsible is punished to the full extent of the law!!! It's ridiculous that children are not safe in society and that most of the time it's someone they know who has caused them harm! My prayers are with Shaniya and her father, who is obviously in agony. I can't imagine!!

First Thank you Nancy Grace for making our missing children a passion of yours, we need more news spokespersons to also make such a committment. Fayetteville NC is my home town, born and raised. I relocated to Philadelphia PA as a teenager and I have seen such horible sights from missing children to murdered children by random gun fire. I am a retired Parole Officer so these old eyes have seen so many horrible things, It once hurt my heart to see such but, in my line of work you get used to it. It saddens my heart to think my little peaceful home town has joined the larger cities in all types of violent crimes from missing/murderder childern to drug traffricking. Over the past 40 years as I visited my home town I tried to deny what my eyes were showing me, I felt like the old commercial where they show the destruction of the land and then they show this lone indian with one tear running down his face. I am so touchd by this missing five year old and the possible horrible things that could happen to her. And, to find out her mother is involed, why did she even take her from her father if she did not want her. I pray and will continue to pray for her safe return. I have always planed to retire back in Fayettevile, however, I don't think my heart can take what has happened to my peaceful, beautiful, small town. We once could sleep with our doors unlocked I shudder to think what would happen now. Again I will continue to pray for little Shaniya. Nancy, please stay true to your heart, we need you out there.

DORA   November 20th, 2009 7:08 pm ET
