A North Dakota babysitter has been arrested for allegedly smoking marijuana while the 3 year old toddler she was supposed to be watching was wandering on a highway!
18 year old Chelsea Walkingeagle has been charged with felony child abuse or neglect after police say she was smoking pot with other family members in a garage while the toddler was walking down the busy roadway. Luckily when police found the child, he was not injured. Eventually a woman came looking for the child and told cops her cousin Chelsea Walkingeagle was supposed to be watching the 3 year old. Police said the woman smelled like marijuana.
When police spoke to Walkingeagle, she stated she had come to visit her uncle and claims her uncle and cousin were the ones smoking marijuana. Authorities allege Walkingeagle left the toddler in a car in the parking lot of the apartment complex while she went to the garage to go get high. The garage is about 50 yards away from where the child was found in the middle of the highway. Cops believe the child was alone for 20 to 30 minutes while Walkingeagle was smoking weed. Walkingeagle made a brief appearance in court last week…she was released on her own recognizance on the condition she passes regular drug tests every 3 weeks. Walkingeagle’s next hearing is on June 17; she faces up to 5 years in prison if convicted as charged.

Anyone who is left to take care of a child should do that duty. If they don't then they should be seriously punished.

This babysitter needs to get some help. How dare anyone leave a child alone in a car for any period of time regardless of what she is doing. She has a responsibility to that child she is caring for.
Frankly, I have nothing against people who smoke pot just those who get careless from the effects of it. You can still maintain while you are high

i think that is pathetic. honestly! i am a mother of a 3 year old and i know i sure as hell would be freaking out if a babysitter did that when she was watching my son. what was she thinking? i think she should be locked up in jail and get whats coming to her. that child didnt ask to be brought into this world, so why would she put him at risk when alls she wants to do is get toaked up?

I have a comment on the babysitter case; I live in North Dakota and she will likely get about a $2000 fine and maybe 30 days in jail if we are lucky.
North Dakota is more for the drug dealers than they are for a crime with a child involved. There are more child pedifiles here than any place I have ever lived. But they brush them under the rug. She will get a slap on the wrist because its her first offense. Please keep up on this case and you will see how the outcome will be. Thank you for your time. we had a similar incident happen in Nacogdoches Tx. NOTHING has been done about this. This baby was two and while his mother was in the house doing who knows what, a man picked her child up off of 259, a major 4 lane highway, the man stayed with the baby for 15 to 20 minutes while waiting for the police, the police had this baby for 15 to 20 aditional minutes before they went to the door to inform the mom. She was arrested over a year ago, CPS has dropped and nothing has been done to the mom.
why don't she talk about the 7 year old child that the police killed. Is'nt that child just as important as tiger woods. I only see white girls and rich people on her show. Do you really think that those people are more important then that little girl. [ JUST WANTED TO KNOW]

I'm not sure who the defensive lawyer was who just reported that THC stays in the blood "regularly" for 30 days, but he is completely incorrect. It is only in extremely rare cases that carboxy-THC can be found in urine for 30 days. With typical use (e.g., "regularly"), carboxy-THC may be detectable in urine for 10 days and in blood for 3 days. This misinformation that is so often spread by legal teams is appalling! Any toxicologist worth their salt should know this.
She is lucky the child wasnt hurt! She should be held accountable for her actions.

How about writing some more articles like "Father drinks alcohol and beats wife and children". Stories like that are much more frequent and more of a problem than pot smokers.

Shameful. People are so self-centered these days. They only
care about what they want at the moment they want it. And to
heck with everyone else. So little regard for the child. Any
way you look at what happened, it's bad news. A Pedophile
or someone looking to grab children for profit could have
come along and stolen the child out of the unlocked car.
If the doors were locked and the windows up, the child
could have suffocated. There is no excuse for this. This
woman was not mature enough to ever be left alone with
a child. The mother should have known this. And if the
Uncle and any other adults present knew the child was
in the car for 30 minutes while they were all getting stoned,

Neither of them cared about the child while the parents were away...and, if the parents truely cared, I am SURE they knew at least that the relatives did drugs...that's probably why the relatives weren't hired to watch the children...so, they should have told her NOT TO ALLOW THE RELATIVES around the child! I wouldn't blame the pot by itself. Toddlers wander from irresponsible babysitters, parents and guardians all the time. She probably shouldn't be a babysitter anyway but to solely blame the situation on smoking pot is not telling the entire truth. Putting the blame on pot, or alcohol or any other substance, takes away the responsibility from the person. People need to own up to their faults and stop trying to blame all outside elements...

I hate the fact they outline pot so much within this story, sure she was probably high but that did not lead to her stupidity in the first place. Its ok to miss a smoking session once in a while. The child needed you way more than that blunt did. Mary Jane may not be the worst drug in the world but if you are too lazy to handle your responsibilities because of it, then it can be just as bad as the rest.

It's a shame that our courts do not care about the children anymore. They do not care that people smoke pot when they are around children. The courts just want to know if the parent smoked with the child otherwise it's okay. That came from child protective service worker when I called before for my graddaughter.
I'm just totally frustrated with our courts not listenting to allagations about neglect or abuse. They just want the parents to make a schedule and do not bring up anything else. I had to actually hire a P.I. in order for the courtts to look into our concerns.
Now after all this, let's legalize marijuana.
I agree that she should be punished for this because she was being irresponsible. The pot didn't make her irresposible. Trust me I have smoked pot for over 30 years for medical and mental reasons. It is the only thing that is keeping me alive(proven by several doctors,therapists and psychiatrists). I home schooled my daughter and she graduated with 3.6. She is now going to college to be a registered nurse. Her first semester she had a 4.0. Everyone should really read up on what all medical marijuana does do for people. It is a natural herb, it doesn't have any man-made chemicals in it. I raised my daughter on my own. Because of all my medical problems that I have all my life I was only able to work 22 years before I had to be put on disability. Everyone that knows me knows I did a great job raising my daughter. I swear on my life pot is nothing like any kind of drug by far and much better than alcohol . It is used for so many different things it is unreal. That is why so many states are legalizing it for medical use and eventually for recreational use all over the U.S. It is also mentioned in the bible under GENESIS. Save lives and this will also help the economy and the criminal rate would also go down and we would have more room in the prisons for people that should be in there. They need to put the murders to death instead of us supporting them. By the way "no" my daughter does not smoke, I have always been honest with her about it and she knows I do it for medical reasons. She is serious about her career and what I have taught her over the years. You have to admit, not bad for a long time smoker!!!

For one yeah the mother should have checked her over before leaving her child with her i mean a child is way more importent then your job a job you can always have but your child you will never get back. She should get a least some amount of time to make her think about what could have happed and maybe she will clean up her life.. My question is this...how did this child get OUT of the car she left it in????Did she leave the doors open, did it climb out the window which would have been very dangerous.Does anyone know the answer? I can't believe how shallow some peoples thinking really is on here, don't blame pot, pot never hurt anybody.....WTF???? It really doesn't even matter that any of them were smoking pot in the first place! What matters is the fact a young helpless three year old was left alone in a car for a lenghty period of time and because he wasn't being watched he could have potentially been killed as he wondered away. As for the post "the highway isn't even that busy", what kind of stupid, half a$$ logic is that? Well since there aren't that many cars that zip down that particular highway a day I guess that would make everything alright. Perhaps since there aren't many cars down that road a day, the odds of a toddler getting hit would be next to none, but impossible...NO! One more thing for all the people who stated, "It could have been worse" that is a highly intelligent comment to make, hope your education expenses didn't burst your bank account.....no duh!!! That was just plain irresponsible period. First of all you don't leave a child anywhere alone, I don't care how long it is. A lot can happen with a child in no time. Secondly, you leave this child to go smoke marijuana so, your habit is more important than the baby and the duty that you have accepted to do. Personally I think it's pitiful, I have a son of my own and nothing is more important than him. NOTHING!!! The saddest part of this whole situation is that because it did not happen in the town of Devils Lake, but on the near by Indian Reservation of Ft. She made an irresponsible mistake and should be punished, but some of you animals seem like you would actually lynch her for her mistake. There are plenty of mistakes one could make that could cost someone the life of their baby. Last time I checked, hundreds of babies die everyday in accidents worldwide and their parents are not all potheads, so get off your high horses.

It never ceases to amaze me how inhuman and idiotic people can be leaving hateful comments about someone who is already suffering for their mistakes.
To clarify a few points, this incident did occur in Devils Lake not on the reservation, meaning she is facing state court charges.It happened on one of North Dakotas busiest highways, thousands of cars and hundreds of trucks pass by that intersection daily. There was potential for the kid to be hurt. There were cars that were going by as the kid stood on the road.
The only ones of you who are complaining about pot have never smoked it. It actually makes you focus on what you are doing . If you can't do a normal task, smoking pot than you don't need it. Obviously she couldn't handle it, there for she should never be around a child or be able to have children. This is a prime example of why young druggies shouldn't have children. I wonder what else was in her system, sounds like alot more than pot to me. I say give her time for being so irresposible for what she did and then force her to be fixed!!!
Well the case has been settled. Chelsea did plead guilty to this charge. She will spend six months in the female prison in North Dakota then be on probation for four years. She also has to pay some fines and fees. For all you out there this was not just due to the fact that she lost track of the child or she was just smoking marijuana. It was the combination of the two that put the childs life at risk.

Well i would say babysitting should be a job where you pull background checks as well as do drug test. They sale little drug test kicks in cvs or walgreens i think. You best believe i would do it to anyone that watches my kids.. I have two boys and when i leave my boys with someone i am trusting that person 100% with their precious lives. That is why they have the name BABYSITTER...Or child care provider.
