Is Boy’s Disappearance Linked to Law & Order Episode?

Police said Wednesday that a recent episode of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” has “great similarity” to the story the mother of a missing boy told them about his disappearance.

“I know that there are several folks up in the operations center, the command post that have taken a look at that episode and have commented that it is strikingly similar in nature,” Maj. Mike Johnson of the Bellevue Police Department told reporters at an afternoon briefing.

Julia Biryukova told police that she left her 2-year-old son, Sky Metalwala, alone in her car while she went to get help when she ran out of gas on Sunday morning. She claimed that when she returned an hour later, he was gone.

In the “SVU” episode, titled “Missing Pieces,” a mother claims that her car was stolen with her baby in it while she was in a convenience store. There are no witnesses who saw the baby or the car theft, and detectives eventually find the vehicle abandoned with no child inside.

The mother later admits that the child is dead and tells police where to find the body. Both parents claim that they were responsible for his death, but the coroner determines that he likely died from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and the parents are not charged.

The episode had originally aired on October 19 and it re-aired Saturday, the night before Sky was reported missing.

Police have not named any suspects in Sky’s disappearance, but Johnson acknowledged that some of the details of the mother’s story are not checking out.

Investigators have thoroughly examined the car and confirmed that it had “enough gas to run the vehicle for some distance,” Johnson said. Cops have not yet determined if there was any other mechanical problem that could have caused the car to stop, but they were planning to test drive it on Thursday.

Also, police have not found anyone besides Julia and her 4-year-old daughter who had seen Sky at all in the two weeks before he was reported missing. Based on interviews with neighbors, Johnson said Julia and her children apparently lived a “reclusive lifestyle.”
