Drew Peterson demands apology from police, says Stacy is still alive

Drew Peterson wants an apology from Illinois police for casting suspicion on him in connection with his fourth wife’s disappearance.

Peterson, who remains in jail on $20 million bond awaiting trial for his third wife’s murder, said in a press release Monday that he believes Stacy Peterson is “still very much alive” and that it was wrong of police to declare her missing and presumed dead. Stacy was last seen in October 2007 and Peterson has denied having anything to do with whatever happened to her.

He has also maintained his innocence in the death of third wife Kathleen Savio, which was ruled an accident in 2004 but was reclassified as a homicide when her body was exhumed after Stacy went missing. His trial has been delayed by disputes over the admissibility of hearsay evidence in that case.

Peterson’s press release pointed to the recent news that Washington mother Judith Bello, who vanished 18 years ago under seemingly suspicious circumstances, called police a few weeks ago to notify them that she was alive and living in California. According to the Daily Herald, authorities determined that she left voluntarily because of marital problems and had not wanted her husband to know where she was.

Joel Brodsky, Peterson’s lead defense attorney, said, “They made it seem like no woman, no mother, would ever just disappear, but as this most recent case shows, it does happen. In fact it happens more than you would think.”

Brodsky blamed the Illinois State Police for creating “a huge cloud of suspicion” over Peterson by stating that Stacy was presumed dead. As a result, Peterson is now demanding an apology.

A state police spokesman declined to comment on Peterson’s request Wednesday.

Men describe finding missing Tennessee mom’s body

The men who discovered missing Tennessee mother Karen Swift’s body near a cemetery on Saturday are speaking out about what they saw.

Local preacher John Robinson and friend Mark Rickman told the Dyersburg State Gazette that they were leaving Bledsoe Cemetery around noon when they saw a body part sticking out from some kudzu vines. They did not get close enough to see whether the body was clothed before they called police.

“It was kind of like hiding in plain sight,” Robinson said.

Dyer County Sheriff Jeff Box said in an interview with WMC that the body was likely concealed until the vegetation began to wilt in the cold weather. He said authorities believe Swift, a 44-year-old mother of four, was killed elsewhere and her body was placed in that location.

Box told WBBJ that there were “apparent injuries” to the body, but investigators are still waiting for the medical examiner’s report to provide more information. They also plan to analyze DNA evidence collected from Swift’s car, her home and her body.

The cemetery is about three miles from the spot where Swift’s car was found abandoned with a flat tire on the morning of October 30 and about two miles from her home. All three locations are off Harness Rd. Swift’s husband reported that he last saw her at home when she was going to sleep with one of their daughters around 1:45 a.m. that day.

Karen had filed for divorce from husband David Swift a few weeks before her disappearance. Box told WREG that David Swift has been cooperating with investigators, has provided DNA samples and allowed them to interview one of the couple’s young daughters.

Authorities are not naming any suspects in Karen Swift’s murder at this time.

Watch “Nancy Grace” tonight at 8 p.m. ET on HLN for more on the hunt for Karen Swift’s killer.
