Two missing Tennessee girls are safe, and the man accused of abducting them and killing their mother and older sister is dead, authorities confirmed Thursday night.
Special operations teams following a tip located Adam Mayes with 12-year-old Alexandria and 8-year-old Kyliyah Bain in a wooded area behind a church in Alpine, Mississippi around 6:50 pm Thursday, FBI special agent Aaron Ford told reporters at a press conference. Ford said Mayes shot himself in the head with a semi-automatic pistol when ordered to surrender. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
According to the Ford, the two girls, who were reported missing on April 27, appeared to be suffering from exposure, dehydration and poison ivy. The bodies of their mother, Jo Ann Bain, and 14-year-old sister Adrienne were found on the property where Mayes lived in Guntown, Mississippi last Friday.

Hardeman County, Tenn. Officials filed upgraded charges today against the wife of a man believed to be on the run with two minor children.
FBI officials say they believe the two girls are still alive.
Authorities allege that the suspect at large, Adam Mayes, murdered family friend, Jo Ann Bain, as well as Bain’s daughter, Adreienne, 14.
Mayes allegedly kidnapped Jo Ann Bain’s younger daughters, Alexandria, 12 and Kyliyah, 8. The girls have not been seen since April 27 when their father Gary Bain reported his wife and daughters missing.
Today investigators released video surveillance of Adam Mayes at County Line #1 convenience store in Guntown, Miss. The video was taken three days after the murders. The missing girls are not captured in the video.
Store clerk, Nick Barghouthi, who was working at the store at the time the video was taken said, "He was so calm…he only bought a coke and walked out,” Barghouthi said.
Barghouthi recalled that Mayes was driving a white Oldsmobile Alero and that he had previously seen Mayes in the same car. He said surveillance cameras are also installed outside the convenience store, as well as on the pumps and the exterior of the building.
The bodies of Jo Ann and Adreienne Bain were discovered by the FBI’s Evidence Recovery Team on May 4. They had been buried in shallow graves behind the Mississippi home where Adam Mayes lived with his mother Mary Mayes, and his wife Teresa Mayes.
According to an arrest affidavit issued today by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Teresa Mayes admitted during a non-custodial police interview that she was involved in removing two corpses from the Bain family home in Hardeman County, Tenn. and driving them to her home in Union County, Miss.
Teresa Mayes allegedly told TBI agents that she was present when her husband killed 14-year-old Adreienne Bain and the girl’s 31-year-old mother. Mayes allegedly told investigators that Jo Ann Bain was killed in a garage adjacent to the Bain’s home.
The document did not say how Bain and her daughter were murdered. Autopsy reports have not been released.
Teresa Mayes is now facing two counts of first degree murder and two counts of especially aggravated kidnapping.
In a previously filed arrest affidavit police allege that Mary Mayes admitted to investigators that she witnessed her son digging in the backyard of her home. The digging allegedly took place on or about April 27, the same day Jo Ann Bain and her daughters were reported missing.
Mary Mayes is charged with four counts of conspiracy to commit especially aggravated kidnapping.
Both Mary and Teresa Mayes were arrested Tuesday and remain in the custody of the Hardeman County Sheriff's Department.
Friends and family say they don’t know why Adam, Mary or Teresa Mayes would want to harm Jo Ann Bain or her daughters.
Fred Kessler, Principal at Boliver High School where Adreinne Bain attended school, said the murdered teen was “a very good girl” and was very conscientious about her studies.
“Her friends would say she’s very loyal,” Kessler told HLN’s Nancy Grace.
Kurt Brown, who lives across the street from Adam Mayes, told HLN’s Nancy Grace that the Bain girls often visited Mayes’ home.
“They were there all the time,” he said, adding that the girls’ mother visited the house at times, but not often.
Brown said Mayes’ Harley Davidson motorcycle had been missing from Mayes’ home. Brown speculated that the motorcycle may have been sold to help Mayes fund his escape.
Investigators continue to focus their search around Union County, Miss., where they say Mayes could be hiding in wooded areas.
Adam Mayes is charged with two counts of first degree murder and two counts of especially aggravated kidnapping.
A $175,000 reward is offered for the safe return of Alexandria and Kyliyah Bain. Police ask anyone with information about the whereabouts of Adam Bain or the girls to call 800.824.3463.

Authorities are asking for the public’s help locating a vehicle that may be associated with the disappearance of California teen Sierra LaMar.
The Santa Clara Sheriff’s Office released a photo Monday of a car that they say closely resembles a red mid-1990s four-door Volkswagen Jetta with a black hood that they identified through witness interviews and review of surveillance videos. 15-year-old LaMar was last seen at her mother’s Morgan Hill home on March 16.
Sgt. Jose Cardoza told the San Jose Mercury News that the red Jetta was seen in the area where LaMar disappeared that morning and was later caught on surveillance video near places where evidence in the case was found. While investigators do not know whether LaMar was in the vehicle, Cardoza said it was “more than a coincidence” that it was spotted in these locations.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the sheriff’s office also announced that a handcuff box and used condoms found a couple of miles from LaMar’s home in late March are not connected to her disappearance. Investigators are still waiting on results of other forensic testing in the case.
Anyone with information about the vehicle is asked to call the Santa Clara Sheriff’s Office at (408) 808-4500 or the anonymous tip line at (408) 808-4431.
